Central State, Wilberforce lockdowns lifted after gunfire report

WILBERFORCE — The campus lockdowns at Central State University and Wilberforce University have been lifted.

Central State University issued this press release around 12 a.m. Tuesday, March 14:

Thank you to the University’s Campus Police Department, Greene County Sheriff’s Office, Wilberforce University Police and Kettering Police’s canine unit for their quick response. The safety and security of our students is of the utmost importance to the University.

Around 8:30 pm today, the University received a report of an armed robbery in one of the University’s buildings. While investigating, officers heard a gunshot. Central State and Wilberforce University campuses were immediately placed on lock down. One female student was wounded. She has been transported to Miami Valley Hospital and is in stable condition. After a search of the nearby woods, a weapon was recovered.

No one else on campus was injured. The Greene County Sheriff’s Office and Central State University Campus Police are continuing the investigation. At this point, the campus lockdown has been lifted.

According to an earlier report from our partners at WDTN:

Greene County Sheriff’s deputies and Central State University officials say the lockdown on Central State’s campus has been lifted. It took affect just before 9 p.m. Monday and was lifted about three hours later.

Wilberforce University also lifted it’s lockdown after several hours. The two universities are less than a mile apart just outside Xenia.

All the activity centered around a co-ed dorm. A witness on scene says she saw a female being carried out on a stretcher and crying. Our crews saw another woman being placed in the back of a cruiser.

A check of the Greene County Jail website shows a 19-year-old woman was arrested for aggravated assault nearly two hours after the lockdown began. We are working to learn if her arrest is connected to the shooting on the Central State campus. The Greene County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation and is expected to release more information on Tuesday morning.
