Yellow Jacket teams both lose

CEDARVILLE — Walsh made the key plays down the stretch to take a 78-73 non-conference win over Cedarville in a battle of longtime rivals, Thursday, Nov. 17 at the Callan Athletic Center.

The unbeaten Cavaliers, 3-0, outscored the hosts 11-4 in the final 2:45 to claim the victory.

Trailing 45-39 early in the second period, the Yellow Jackets ran off 11 straight points over the next two minutes for a 50-45 advantage.

After the two sides traded three-pointers, there were three ties in the final 10 minutes and neither team led by more than three points until the final.

J.C. Faubion finished with team-highs of 17 points and seven rebounds for Cedarville, 1-2.

Dazhonetae Bennett tallied 14 points while Easton Bazzoli contributed 11.

“Our chance to really push the lead out was in the first half and we didn’t take advantage of it. We challenged them at halftime to keep attacking. I thought we attacked better in the second half, but then we didn’t defend. You aren’t going to let a good team shoot 69 percent from the floor (in the second half) and beat them. It’s not going to happen,” said Cedarville head coach Pat Estepp.

“Ultimately, at the end of the second half we got out-toughed. We were outrebounded by 10 in the second half, we missed free throws, we missed layups, and we didn’t defend. Give credit to Walsh. They were more physical and tougher on both ends of the floor. We had our chances. If we make layups and free throws, we win that game.”

CU women fall at Tiffin

TIFFIN — The Yellow Jackets women’s basketball team erased a double digit halftime deficit at Tiffin, but the host Dragons pulled out a 70-63 victory in Thursday’s non-conference action.

Cedarville faced a 37-24 hole at the intermission before making its move in the third quarter.

The Jackets outscored TU 21-11 in the frame to pull within three. Kaitlyn Holm’s three pointer with 8:02 left in the fourth quarter produced the game’s only tie, 50-50.

The Dragons responded with seven unanswered points to regain the lead for good.

Breanne Watterworth pumped in a team-high 18 points and grabbed six rebounds for Cedarville, 0-3.

Baylee Bennett added 16 points to go along with four assists while Regina Hochstetler chipped in 14 points.

Taylor Buckley came off the bench with a career-high 10 rebounds. Holm dished out five assists and Emily Williams had eight points with nine rebounds.

“Even though we all hate losing, our response to come back in the third quarter the way we did and give ourselves a chance to win the game was extremely gratifying,” said women’s head coach Kari Hoffman. “I’m excited where we can go from here and we know we have a tough group of girls in that locker room that want to battle. I’m proud of them, and I must give Taylor (Buckley) praise for the huge minutes she gave us with 10 boards.”

The women will host Cincinnati Christian at 1 p.m. today at the Callan Center.
