WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE — Air Force officials announced that Maj. Gen. Robert McMurry Jr. has been nominated for promotion to lieutenant general and will become the commander of the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center headquartered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Lt. Gen. John F. Thompson, the current commander of the AFLCMC, has been nominated for assignment as commander, Space and Missile Systems Center, Air Force Space Command, Los Angeles Air Force Base, California.

McMurry is currently the commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory, where he is responsible for managing a $2.1 billion Air Force science and technology program and an additional $2.3 billion in externally funded research and development.

In his new position, McMurry will oversee the total life cycle management for aircraft, engines, munitions, and electronic systems.

McMurry entered the Air Force in 1984 through the University of Texas ROTC program. He has served in a variety of engineering, program management, and staff and command positions at all levels of the Air Force.

“I’m humbled to be considered for this opportunity,” said McMurry. “This is truly a great honor and while I will truly miss the men and women of the Air Force Research Lab, I’m looking forward to working with all the great men and women in AFLCMC as we continue to acquire and support war-winning capabilities,” he added.

Thompson will replace Lt. Gen. Samuel Greaves, who has been nominated to lead the Missile Defense Agency.

“It is my great honor to lead the 26,000 Airmen of the Life Cycle Management Center, but the prospect of leading the Space and Missile Center is also truly exciting. I have had the opportunity to be assigned here at Wright-Patterson four different times throughout my career, and while I will miss the people here on-base, in the Miami Valley and at all of our over 60 AFLCMC operating locations across the globe, I know they will all continue to provide amazing community support and world-class weapon systems to our great nation,” said Thompson.
