CEDARVILLE — Lauren Jackson, Rosie Thompson and Janelle English figured in on every point as Cedarville defeated visiting Indiana East, 6-3, in a non-conference women’s tennis match on Friday, Sept. 23.
The Yellow Jackets won their third consecutive match to improve to 3-1.
“That was a good, hard fought match. IU East is a much improved team, with many consistent players. Our girls played well, and earned a win that was much closer than the score indicates,” CU coach Dr. Dee Morris said.
Jackson led the way at the Johnson-Murdoch Tennis Complex. She teamed up with Kristen Heydt at first doubles and swept her younger sister in singles, who played first for the Red Wolves.
“One highlight of the singles matches was the match-up of the Jackson sisters at the no. 1 spot. It was a good match, in which senior sister Lauren prevailed, but younger sis, Morgan, made her work hard for the win,” said Morris. “Other highlights for us were the tenacious play of Rosie Thompson at the no. 4 spot, and that of no. 5, freshman Janelle English. Thus far, we are improving with each match we play. A coach could not ask for more!”
Thompson notched a point at fourth singles after joining Deanna Whalen for a win at second doubles.
English paired up with Halie Hardwick at no. 3 doubles before cruising at fifth singles.
“Most of the IU East players just patiently keep the ball coming back, and many times provoke an error from their opponent,” Morris said. “Once again, our doubles teams played excellent tennis and allowed us to go into singles needing just two wins there to clinch the match. That is a huge advantage, and puts the opponent ‘up against the wall,’ needing to win five of the six singles, which is a very tall order.
• Jackson registered her 30th career singles victory with 24 coming at the no. 1 position.
• Cedarville won the previous four meetings against the Red Wolves by 9-0 scores.
• Jackson and Heydt have a 20-5 career first doubles mark.
The Jackets have just one home match remaining this fall and will next play at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27 versus Ohio Christian.
