FAIRBORN — The Fairborn Fire Department will see new equipment added to its inventory soon, as city council passed a resolution Oct. 19, that willlallow the department to purchase 24 self contained breathing apparatus’ along with related equipment.
The department also accepted a grant from Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, which aided in the purchase of a Lucas device for the south side of town to create faster response times.
The device — costing more than $13,000 — works to revive individuals who are experiencing cardiac arrest by performing chest compressions at the appropriate speed and depth. The department has already included one devices in the north area of town.
Council members felt that approving the resolution related to purchasing new equipment for the department was a no-brainer, as having current equipment is essential. The equipment costs $127,902 and will be purchased from Findley Fire Equipment. The department is phasing out equipment from 1997.
“We have to get current equipment,” Mayor Dan Kirkpatrick said. “This is clearly one of the most important pieces of equipment for a firefighter.”
Battalion Chief Adam Howard said he is thankful for the department to be receiving the equipment.
In other business, Kirkpatrick is urging citizens to assist in litter control within the city. Three groups worked last weekend on its adopt a highway project along Dayton-Yellow Springs Road and collected 32 bags of trash in doing so.
“I was amazed at the kinds of things people toss by the road,” he said. “We found two mufflers, half a dozen car parts — someone is driving around making a lot of noise out there — but the point is, we need to get our litter problem under control. We need people to take more serious action. Please don’t throw things out your car. One issue you don’t notice until you walk along the street are cigarette butts, there were literally thousands along Dayton-Yellow Springs Road … This is my plea that citizens in Fairborn be a little more active in working on litter control. We have the presidential debates coming next fall, that’s a great opportunity to showcase the wonderful community we live in, and here’s the chance for us to really get a handle on our litter before then.”
Citizens of Fairborn will see a new commercial storage facility open up at 2160 Commerce Center Boulevard, after council voted to pass an ordinance that would rezone the area from industrial research to planned commercial development.
Council will host a community forum 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26 at Roush’s Family Restaurant, 305 W. Main St. The next council meeting will take place 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2 in the council chambers within the Fairborn Government Center.
