BEAVERCREEK — The 22nd annual Circle of Victory (COV) Cancer Awareness Walk continues the tradition of bringing survivors and families together to raise money for Greene County cancer patients.

The fundraiser hosted by Greene Medical Foundation takes places Sunday, Oct. 11 at Soin Medical Center in Beavercreek for the first time.

“Greene Medical Foundation serves all of Greene County, therefore hosting the event at Soin Medical Center this year enables the Foundation to expand its mission throughout the county,” said Greene Medical Foundation President Jeff Brock.

“Cancer touches all of us personally and professionally. Every week, Greene Medical Foundation is helping cancer patients with immediate needs,” said Greene Memorial Hospital & Soin Medical Center Community Outreach Coordinator and COV organizer Donna Saraga. “This fundraiser is one way to bring people together for this important cause.”

Every dollar raised through this fundraiser goes to underwrite cancer treatment, and help patients with medication, wigs, prostheses, and other financial burdens that occur. Individuals, organizations, businesses, and churches representing a cross-section of Greene County have stepped up over the last 21 years to raise more than $225,000.

“Greene Medical Foundation’s Circle of Victory Cancer Awareness Walk is an important fundraiser to help raise funds for Greene County cancer victims as they battle a cancer diagnosis,” said Beavercreek Mayor Brian Jarvis. “Having had a recent cancer diagnosis myself, I’ll certainly be supporting this 5K Walk/Run as it winds around the Soin Medical Center campus and through the nearby Beavercreek neighborhoods. This means a lot for the City of Beavercreek, for our local hospital to sponsor such an important event in support of men and women who live in Greene County or are receiving cancer treatment at a Kettering Health Network facility.”

In addition to the walk there will be many things for participants to take part in that day. Food trucks will serve up lunch prior to the walk, including those from El Meson and Hunger Paynes. Some of the health and local vendors attending this year include: Kettering Cancer Care Physicians, Fairborn Firefighters Pink Medic, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Crash Truck, Kettering Breast Evaluation Center, Jamberry Nails, Smoothie King, Origami Owl, health screenings, nutrition information, blood pressure checks and much more.

The walk’s history began on a Mother’s Day weekend in Fairborn in 1993. The 65 walkers joined founder Patty Davis, a breast cancer survivor, at Rona Hills Park for the evening walk. Since 2004, when Greene Medical Foundation took over the walk, it has grown significantly to more than 700 walkers.

The event will open with the introduction of this year’s ambassador and cancer survivor, Grant Jacobs, of Cedarville. The 5K course will set off from Soin weaving through campus and the adjoining neighborhood. It concludes with a ceremony recognizing those who are currently living with cancer, remembering those who fought bravely but lost their battle and celebrating those who have conquered it.

“With event sponsorship assistance, we make sure that every walker registration and every donation collected directly benefits Greene County cancer patients,” said Saraga.

Registration, vendors, and food trucks open at 12:30 p.m. Opening ceremonies will begin just before the walk start at 2 p.m. Contact the Foundation at 937-352-2250 for more information or become a sponsor. Soin Medical Center, along with its sister hospital, Greene Memorial Hospital in Xenia, serve Greene County as part of the Kettering Health Network.
