CMYS presents first concert of season

Greene County News Report

YELLOW SPRINGS – The Telegraph String Quartet will open the 2015-16 Chamber Music in Yellow Springs season, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27.

The concert, at the First Presbyterian Church in Yellow Springs, 314 Xenia Ave., will feature Joseph Haydn’s Op. 20 no. 2 from 1772, and closes with Antonin Dvořak’s String Quartet Op. 105. The Telegraph will perform two modernist composers in between, including the American Henry Cowell’s String Quartet No. 4, called United, and Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff’s Five Pieces for String Quartet.

Beginning at 6:45 p.m. Kevin Mulhall of Antioch College will give the pre-concert lecture in the church. The event will wrap-up with a meal following the concert.

Formed two years ago, and based in San Francisco, they are currently an Ensemble in Residence at the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music. Their mission is to tell the emotional story of each work, eliciting the drama inherent within, be it masterpieces of the repertoire or the work of our own time.

The Telegraph String Quartet come to Yellow Springs as Grand Prize and Gold Medal winners in last year’s 2014 International Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, as well as one of the Shouse Ensembles at the Great Lakes Music Festival.

Opening the season with a Haydn quartet – one famous for its equality of voices, with each instrument shining forth in its own way – is a means to celebrate chamber music in the Miami Valley. The forthcoming “Season of Variety” will bring varied instrumentation and musicians from across the region, the country, and the world, and season subscriptions are still available ($100 for five concerts; $25 for students). More information about the season can be found at

Those wishing to attend a post-concert dinner with the artists in a local home should contact CMYS at (937) 374-8800 at least four days in advance to reserve a place. Concert tickets are $25 for adults and $7 for full-time students; information on purchasing advance tickets is available at

Chamber Music in Yellow Springs is supported by donors and volunteers as well as an Ohio Arts Council Sustainability Grant. Contact [email protected] with any questions.
