Devotional: Our intercessor

“Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high. My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; on behalf of a man he pleads with God as a man pleads for his friend.” (Job 16:19-20)

This is a unique insight of Job. He appears to understand that he has someone in heaven who will argue his case before God. This is pure Messianic and a reference to Jesus. This intercessor is his friend, implying a relationship. Later on Job will express, “I know that my Redeemer lives,” thus confirming once more this relationship he has with his intercessor though faith. It is a marvelous thing to know we face God not alone but with Jesus at our side.

As Job comes to God with a truly repentant heart tears flow. How can we really understand the grief we have caused our God? How can we comprehend the patience it has taken from our God toward us as we have rebelled against Him? When this reality does hit us it can only cause our eyes to burst forth with tears of sorrow followed by tears of joy – tears of repentance followed by tears of forgiveness. God is so good, tears come to our eyes as we, even in this life, get a glimpse of His Holiness, and love of us. He loves us so much!

Heavenly Father, thank You for the times that true repentance impacts us. Thank You for those times that tears well up in our eyes knowing the pain we have caused You. Thank You for loving us so much that You have given Jesus to stand for us before You. His sacrifice on the Cross brings tears of sorrow and joy. Thank You for Your great love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
