Dirt racers enjoy fair’s clay track

XENIA — Practice runs began at 5 p.m., and head-to-head double-elimination dirt drag racing began at 7 p.m. and went nonstop until almost midnight, during the KOI Dirt Drag Racing series’ second-ever visit to the Greene County Fair on Saturday Aug. 5.

Series Director Heather Cleaver said the well-packed Greene County infield clay made for a quality 200-foot dirt drag strip. “And we really like it when we follow a truck or tractor pull the night before. Those guys really work the ground and get everything solid for us,” Cleaver said.

The clay surface was so packed that higher powered machines in the diesel categories could be heard squealing their tires at the start. According to Cleaver, the Kentucky Ohio Indiana Dirt Drag Racing series runs events as far north as Ashtabula, Ohio and as far south as Tennessee.

The Greene County event was the 20th event of the 2017 season, out of 35 events on the KOI schedule.

Champions and runners-up from the KOI Dirt Drag Racing action Saturday, Aug. 5 at the Greene County Fair in Xenia. Entrants were not required to provide last names or hometowns.
