Goecke ties Jr. League record

XENIA — Tyler Goecke tied a longstanding junior league golf record, and won all three special contests, during Wednesday’s June 28 first day of the WGC Junior Golf League.

Goecke emerged as the leader in the 10-player Senior Division for golfers ages 14-18, shooting a 2-under-par 33 over nine holes. Goecke, who plays on the Carroll High golf team, also claimed contest wins for Longest Putt Made, Closest to the Pin, and Closest to the Pin second shot. According to Junior Golf League director Jim Beaver, Goecke’s 33 tied the junior league mark set by Nathan Starbuck, of Beavercreek, in 1999. Oakwood’s Jim Galvin was second in the Seniors Division with a 42.

Twenty junior golfers showed up for the first week of the WGC Jr. Golf League. Three girls competed in their division with Grace Bond capturing medalist honors with a 44 in a seven-hole competition. Thirteen-year-old Miles Witt won the nine-hole Boys Junior Division with a score of 41.

Play continues next Wednesday, July 5 with registration at 10:40 a.m. and tee off times at 11.

WSU swim team deadline nears

FAIRBORN — A group of former swimmers and friends have set out to make the upcoming college swimming and diving season a reality for the Wright State University team through a fundraising effort. If the funds are raised, there will be a limited schedule, including the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships. This will give the student-athletes an opportunity for one more season.

The fundraising group has been charged to raise $85,000 by Friday, June 30.

At the June 8 meeting of the Wright State University Board of Trustees, the members gave the directive to the Interim President Curtis McCray and the Director of Athletics Bob Grant to explore a plan for the swimming and diving teams to compete during the 2017-18 season.

As of June 28, the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) has raised $65,105, or slightly more than 76 percent of the total. Contact Greg Lockard at [email protected] to learn how to donate.
