Lessons from the state fair

Exodus 15:13 “In Your lovingkindness You have led the people whom You have redeemed; In your strength You have guided them to Your holy habitation.”

Well, they did it again! Abigail and her high school friends have pulled off another fabulous drama production. They spent many weeks and days practicing and preparing for these performances and they did not disappoint. They treated their audiences to an enjoyable weekend at the Iowa State Fair.

Belly laughs filled the high school auditorium Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night as we followed the loveable and hilarious Frake family’s adventures at the Iowa State Fair. The plot, though filled with crazy love affairs for the youngsters, the elder Frakes, and even their prize hog Blue Boy, was closer to real life than one might expect. Ordinary life events confronted each character and forced them to make choices as to how they would respond to each circumstance.

Margie needed to choose if she would marry Harry, the fully organized and planned out young man she had known all her life, or take a risk on a suave newspaper reporter she met at the fair. Wayne when faced with Eleanor’s opportunity to go to college needed to decide if he would wait for her or fall for a fancy entertainer who didn’t like “complications.” Mother and Daddy Frake had to come to the reality that their children were growing up. Would they stay sad and melancholy or embrace the joy of having each other to themselves once again? Each experience, whether filled with joy or fraught with heartbreak, demanded a response that directed the plot of the show.

Isn’t that just like real life? Every day we meet experiences that could make or break us. We can choose to react thoughtlessly to the moment at hand or respond with wisdom and grace. These are the qualities that separate the strong from the weak.

I am grateful that those who belong to the Lord have all they need to meet each day’s trials appropriately. We are not left on our own to figure out the proper response, but have a heavenly Father who leads us by His abundant lovingkindness. He gives us strength and wisdom to navigate each circumstance we will meet if we focus our hearts and minds on Him.

This same God who brought Israel out of their Egyptian bondage guided His children through the middle of the Red Sea, delivered them safely to the other side, destroyed their enemies with great force, and guided them to the Promised Land is also our God. He never changes and He cannot fail.

All’s well that ends well for the Frake family. Their crazy experiences brought them to a happy ending as it usually does in fairy tales and play productions. But what about real life? When faced with difficult decisions or discouraging setbacks, how will you respond? Will you react according to your natural personality or choose to trust God’s infinite wisdom and guidance?

In the past He has lovingly led His children through impossibly difficult situations and He can do the same for you. So whether you are home, at school, or even at the Iowa State Fair, trust Your Heavenly Father. He will lead you safely home! — Love Mama
