Jacoby Creek facing auction

YELLOW SPRINGS — The Jacoby Creek, which is a 267 acre property and element to the quality of drinking water for Xenia and Yellow Springs, is going to auction in nine parcels Thursday, March 16. The Tecumseh Land Trust is recruiting the assistance of community members to help preserve the land.

Located just west of the village of Yellow Springs, the Jacoby Creek traverses the largest parcel for sale – 125 acres – and the majority of the property is within the “Jacoby Greenbelt,” a protection goal of the Village of Yellow Springs for more than 40 years. Tecumseh Land Trust needs the help of community members to permanently protect as much of this property as possible.

Here’s how individuals can help:

– Bid on some or all of the property. Contact the land trust at 937-767-9490 if interested in bidding or in connecting with other interested bidders. Tecumseh Land Trust officials are working to assemble funds to purchase a permanent conservation easement from the winning bidder or bidders, which can help defray the purchase price.

– Community members can contribute to a fund to protect the Jacoby Creek property. Contribute online at www.tecumsehlandtrust.org, look for the Jacoby Creek donate box or drop a check to the Tecumseh Land Trust with Jacoby Creek Protection in the memo line. Go to Tecumseh Land Trust’s Facebook page for matching gift opportunities as they become available.

Opportunities to get involved are forthcoming. Join the Tecumseh Land Trust 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 4 at the Bryan Center, 100 Dayton Street on the second floor, for an organizational meeting. A bidders education meeting is slated to take place 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 8; the location has yet to be announced. The Tecumseh Land Trust is also hosting a series of open house events for potential bidders interested in conservation easements 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, March 7; 8-10 a.m. Thursday, March 9; 4-6 p.m. Sunday, March 12; and 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 14 at the land trust’s office, 4633 U.S. Route 68 North.

Interested individuals can also contact Michele Burns for more information concerning the 267 Arnovitz farm auction and/or for other volunteer opportunities at 937-767-9490 or [email protected].

“Now is the time to reach out to everyone you know who can help in any of the ways above,” the land trust wrote in a press release. “You can make a real difference for water protection and conservation in this community today — please act.”
