Serving up generosity

FAIRBORN — Fairborn City School officials served up some love Tuesday to approximately 800 individuals during the 10th-annual Baker Middle School Sixth-Grade Thanksgiving Feast.

The traditional holiday helpings, including turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, vegetables and sweet treats, were made possible by the donations of parents and staff.

“We try to build a family here (at BMS), where the kids want to learn and work hard,” said BMS Teacher Jeff Barr, who made the meal a tradition among the school. “[This event] is stressful for teachers, but for our kids — we would do anything.”

A teacher within the district previously held their own Thanksgiving meal within their own classroom. When Barr caught wind of this, he decided to share the love with all of the sixth-grade students.

“During the first year, there was a family that went through and [a family member] said to [their child] that this was the only Thanksgiving meal they would get,” Barr said, explaining that the comment inspired him to bring the tradition back each year.
