WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE — Athletes from around the world are scheduled to descend on the Miami Valley for the 20th annual Air Force Marathon Saturday, Sept. 17 at Wright-Patterson Air Force.
“We are always excited about the Air Force Marathon,” said Rob Aguiar, Air Force Marathon race director. “But this year is super special because we’re celebrating the 20th time we’ve held the event and we’ve added a lot of new pieces that we think people will enjoy.”
The marathon will feature four event distances including the full marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K race.
First held in 1997 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Air Force, the Air Force Marathon has grown to host 15,000 runners from all fifty states and many different countries around the world.
Aside from the races, there are a number of other exciting events on the schedule, including the Air Force Marathon Sports and Fitness Expo. The expo will host more than 100 exhibitors featuring the latest developments in sports, fitness and nutrition. Held at the Wright State University Nutter Center Sept. 15 and 16, the two-day expo is free and open to the public.
Four-time Olympian and 2014 Boston Marathon winner Meb Keflezighi will be on hand as the special guest speaker at the expo, Breakfast of Champions and the pre-race gourmet pasta dinner at the National Museum of the United States Air Force Sept.16.
In 2015, Keflezighi was named the “Most Influential Person in Running” by Runner’s World, and he will be joining marathon weekend activities fresh off competing in this year’s Olympic Marathon in Rio de Janeiro, finishing 33rd with a time of 2:16:46.
