Carroll defeats Xenia
XENIA — Tyler Goecke shot a 3-over-par 38 over the WGC Golf Course front nine to lead Carroll (1-4) to a 178-188 boys varsity golf win, Wednesday, the team’s first match win of the season. Curtis Mackey shot what his coach described as his “best round in two years” to finish with a 41 for the Patriots. Xenia (1-3) was led by Evan Adkins, who shot a 43. Travis Newell shot a 45 and, in his first varsity match, Logan Bilbre finished with a 49.
Alter golfers top Golden Eagles
BELLBROOK — The Alter Knights edged Bellbrook in a non-league boys golf match Aug. 30, 167-177. Mason Zimmer led Bellbrook with a 42 at the par 36 Yankee Trace Golf Club. Raif Foster and Luke DiCicco each shot 43 and Zach Crompton 49.
Cedarville second in tri-match
CEDARVILLE — Cedarville’s boys golf team shot a 180 to finish second in a tri-match with Springfield Northeastern (167) and Middletown Christian (187), Aug. 30 at Locust Hills.
Caleb Smith shot 41 for the Indians, while Adam Wood added a 43, Noah Myers 46 and Jadon Horsley 50. Cedarville is 1-6 overall and 2-6 in the Ohio Heritage Conference.
Fairborn beats West Carrollton
FAIRBORN — The Lady Skyhawks had little trouble with West Carrollton in a Greater Western Ohio Conference American South Division volleyball match Aug. 30, winning, 25-12, 25-22, 25-13.
Taylor Rice paced the Skyhawks (3-3 overall, 3-0 GWOC) with 19 digs, 13 aces and nine kills. Jessica Black was solid at the net with seven kills and two blocks. She also had two digs. Kayleigh Finlayson had 10 digs, a 2.7 passing average and also had four aces and one kill. Elena North chipped in 15 assists and a kill, while Hannah Borchert had four aces and two digs. Taylor Soulati had eight digs and two aces, and Maddie Blandino contributed two kills, one ace and one dig.
Bellbrook blanks Brookville
BELLBROOK — Bellbrook used a pair of goals from Bailey Sedlak and a goal and assist from Natalie Stein to blank Brookville, 6-0, in a Southwestern Buckeye League Southwestern Division girls soccer match Aug. 30.
Cassidy Bereda, Gabby Gerbic and Cassidy Hofacker also scored for Bellbrook (2-0, 2-0 SWBL). Other assists came from Audrey Spirk, Lauren Chew, and Maleah Miracle.
Sidney edges Fairborn
SIDNEY — Fairborn played one if its best and most-intense matches this season but lost, 3-2, to Sidney in a Greater Western Ohio Conference crossover tennis match.
“We’ve had a tough time with these North Division teams and we looked at this one as a true test for us and hopefully a win,” coach Doug Coy said.
Brooklyn Hunter was sharp at first singles, winning, 6-2, 6-4. Preslee Chapman and Shayna Osborne continued their solid play at first doubles with a 6-2, 6-4 win. Acadia Wulf battled at second singles, losing 6-7 (8-10), 3-6, while Kyla Secrest lost, 1-6, 6-3, 2-6, at third singles.
“She came back and played a great second set then unfortunately just ran out of gas in the third set,” Coy said.
Megan Koonce and Paige Murry lost, 2-6, 4-6, at second doubles but Coy said the two will learn from the match. Fairborn is 3-6 overall and 0-4 in the GWOC. In reserve action, McKayla Lyons won 8-4, while Jayna Varner and Tiana Thomas won 8-3 in doubles.

Xenia Tornadoes tryouts set
XENIA — The Xenia Tornadoes semi-professional football team will hold a tryout for its 2017 team at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 at Spring Hill Park, located just off Ormsby Drive. Tryouts are free, make sure you bring water cleats and shorts. Tryouts will consist of agility drills, route running, and more.
Central State names induction class
WILBERFORCE — The 2016 Hall of Fame Luncheon will be held at Country Club of the North 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14. All those planning to attend must RSVP prior to the event and purchase tickets on or before Friday, Oct. 2.
Five individuals and four teams make up this year’s class: Leonard “Tony” Blaine ‘62, John E. Day ‘71, Eric Love ‘83, Dr. Paul Nitz, James Rollins ‘96, 1960 & 1962 men’s cross country teams, 1983 football team and the 1991 women’s track & field team. Rain wins again
DEGRAFF — Shady Bowl Speedway will not be racing on Saturday, Sept. 3. This will give the locals drivers and fans to attend Speedfest at Winchester, Ind. The Bowl will also be shut down on Saturday, Sept. 10. This date marks the last race ever at Columbus Motor Speedway after seventy one years of racing allowing fans and drivers one more chance to see racing at the Obetz oval. The next race at the Bowl will be on Sunday, Sept. 11.
Drifting Series heads to Kil-Kare Raceway
WESTFIELD, Ind. — The Midwest Drift Union will bring the third round of its Championship Series to Kil-Kare Raceway on Sept. 17 in Xenia. The MDU was founded in 2010 as a Midwest regional feeder series with the intention of advancing the area’s top drifting competitors to the professional level. Last season, the top-3 drivers were rewarded with a Formula Drift Pro 2 competitors license.
