Veteran Pats coach passes away

-Staff Report

Longtime Carroll girls varsity basketball coach Rob Berry died Thursday morning after a battle with cancer.

Berry, who was 64, had coached at Carroll High School for 14 years. In that time, he won four league titles in the now-defunct Mid-Miami League (from 2003 through 2006), three Girls Greater Catholic League championships (Grey North Division in 2009-‘10; 2011-‘12; and 2012-‘13) and was the GGCL Coach of the Year in 2009-‘10.

“Coach Rob Berry passed away in his home early Thursday, July 21, surrounded by his family. The entire Carroll High School Community mourns the loss of Coach Berry. Our prayers are with his family, current players, and for the many women who were fortunate enough to play for him throughout his coaching career. … Coach Berry built our girls’ basketball team into one of the premier programs in the State of Ohio, and his legacy will be long lasting,” Carroll officials posted on the school’s Facebook page.

His Patriot teams won Division II district championships in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013. The 2011 team won the regional championship and finished as state runners up in the D-II title game that year, losing 54-51 in the final to Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown.

According to the school, Berry’s career record was 260-87 for a .749 career winning percentage.

On Thursday evening, Carroll’s longtime athletic rivals, the Kettering Alter Knights expressed their condolences on Twitter.com saying “The Alter community would like to express our deepest sympathies to the @Carroll_Crazies faithful. You are in our prayers — @ALTERGOLDRUSH.”
