Raider swimmers at Olympic Trials

FAIRBORN — Wright State University swimmer Mitch Stover competed Monday in the 100-meter backstroke at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb. He also competed in the 200 individual medley on June 30.

Though he did not make the time in either, Stover’s time of 57.50 seconds moved him up almost 50 spots overall. He placed fifth in his preliminary heat at 2:06.33 in the 200 IM, finishing 64th overall.

Raider alumni Kile Aukerman also is in action in Omaha. Sunday, he improved his best time in the 100 breaststroke to 1:03.00. He also competed in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.69. Generally, only 10 percent of swimmers at this qualifier improve their times as he placed 61st of 139 in the 100 breast.

Reds hosting ‘Night of Their Own’

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds baseball organization will be hosting the third annual A Night of Their Own — Baseball 101 event from 4:30-9:30 p.m. July 21 at Great American Ball Park in downtown Cincinnati. The event is a chance for women of all ages to eat, play and learn with Reds coaches, broadcasters, staff and special guests to get an inside look at the game of baseball.

A dinner buffet will be served from 5:30 -6:30 p.m., followed by the chance to throw on the pitcher’s mound, shag fly balls in the outfield and even take a few swings at live pitches in the batter’s box. Attendees will meet Reds manager Bryan Price, and broadcasters Marty and Thom Brennaman. Attendees will also get baseball tips from members of the Reds coaching staff, including third base coach and former Cincinnati Reds player Billy Hatcher.

Cost is $175 which includes an upscale buffet with open bar, an upgraded gift bag featuring an exclusive ladies Reds watch and a Reds wine tumbler, a ticket to an upcoming Reds baseball game, and an extensive guided tour of the ball park. All proceeds will benefit outreach programs of the Reds Community Fund.

Girls fall leagues filling now

BEAVERCREEK — The Beavercreek High School girls basketball program will be hosting the 17th Annual Girls Basketball Fall League from Sept. 11 to Oct. 23 on Sundays at the high school, located at 2660 Dayton-Xenia Road.

All teams will play a total of seven games on five Sundays with no game TBA (to accommodate the college exposure tournaments, date subject to change).

The league will be a total of 12 high school teams (ninth through 12th grade). There will be 8-10 girls per team, keeping in mind that only two players from each school may play on the same team (per the Ohio High School Athletic Association rule). Space is limited to 120 players and restricted based on OHSAA rules. The talent level will be balanced as much as possible across all teams and a coach will be supplied for each team.

Deadline is Aug. 22, or until the league is full. Cost is $75 per player, which includes a numbered jersey. Make checks payable to: Beavercreek Athletic Boosters.
