Buccaneers win over Fairborn

FAIRBORN — Xenia broke open a close Greater Western Ohio Conference, South Division battle with Fairborn in the fourth quarter, to claim a 36-24 win Monday night at the Memorial Fieldhouse in Fairborn.

Xenia (4-14, 2-4 GWOC South) outscored the Skyhawks, 16-6, in the final quarter of play.

Jada Wallace led Xenia with 12 points scored. Teammate Trinity Morton finished with 11. No statistics were available for Fairborn (4-13, 1-5 GWOC South).

Xenia’s next scheduled game is set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at West Carrollton.

Fairborn travels to Lebanon for a 7 p.m. contest that same day.

Carroll bashes Madison

RIVERSIDE — Host Carroll bookended a pair of lopsided scoring quarters together and bashed Middletown Madison by an 84-33 score on Monday at Carroll High School.

The Patriots jumped out to a 34-4 lead after one period of play, played even with the Mohawks for the second and third quarters, then outscored Madison 24-5 in the fourth.

Amanda Schroeder scored 23 points and hauled in eight rebounds to lead Carroll, and Olivia Seymour finished with 17 in the win. No individual stats were available for Madison.

Carroll (12-6, 6-1 in the Greater Catholic League Co-Ed, North Division) will host Dayton Chaminade Julienne at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27.

Kenton Ridge nips Rams

JAMESTOWN — Host Greeneview outscored Springfield Kenton Ridge 19-11 in the fourth quarter, but fell a point shy of tying the visiting Cougars (12-5) in Monday’s 59-58 Ridge win at Greeneview High School.

No individual stats were provided for Greeneview. Mikayla Morris and Sydney Bates scored 23 and 20 points respectively for the Cougars.

Dayton Christian rallies past Ambassadors

MIAMISBURG — Host Dayton Christian trailed Xenia Christian 16-12 at halftime, but outscored the Ambassadors 23-18 in the second half to earn Monday’s Metro Buckeye Conference win.

Marin Reis led the Warriors (8-8, 3-4 MBC) with 14 points and 11 rebounds. No stats were available for Xenia Christian. The Ambassadors are now 14-4 overall, 5-3 in the Metro Buckeye Conference. They’ll host Middletown Christian for a 6:45 p.m. contest Thursday, Jan. 28 at Xenia Christian High.

SPRINGBORO — Host Springboro jumped out quickly, leading after one quarter 16-4, and cruised to a 26-11 win on Monday. Fairborn’s seventh grade squad was led by Jodee Austin’s seven points.

Verstrepen named HL Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS — Wright State junior Linsey Verstrepen has been selected as the Horizon League Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 24, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday.

Verstrepen (Westerlo, Belgium) picked up two wins as the Raiders defeated crosstown rival Dayton, 4-3, Friday night at the Five Seasons Sports Park in the spring dual match opener for both teams. After she teamed with Karoline Haller to win 6-2 in no. 2 doubles, Verstrepen won at second singles, 7-5, 6-4.

On the season, Verstrepen has won six singles matches, including victories over Bowling Green, West Virginia, Western Michigan and Indiana, and has won seven times in doubles play, including decisions over Toledo, Valparaiso (twice) and Oakland.

Wright State is off until hosting Northern Kentucky in the Horizon League opener at noon on Friday, February 5, at the South Regency Tennis Center, on 3020 W. Tech Road in Miamisburg. The Raiders will also face Akron later that day at 7 p.m., also at South Regency.

TRYOUTS

Dragons anthem tryouts Feb. 27

DAYTON —The Dayton Dragons minor league baseball team will host National Anthem tryouts from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek.

The winners will perform the national anthem at Dragons games throughout the season, with the grand prize winner performing at Opening Day 2016 before the Dragons host the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Fifth Third Field 4 p.m. Saturday, April 9.

Pre-registration is now underway at daytondragons.com/nationalanthem. The first 200 entrants who pre-register for this event will receive a scheduled tryout time.

Arnold 5K run set for March 6

COLUMBUS — The 16th annual Arnold 5K will be held on Sunday, March 6 in downtown Columbus. The race is part of the Arnold Sports Festival Weekend. All entrants receive an Arnold 5K race T-shirt and a free entry ($20 value) to the 27th Annual Arnold Sports Festival after the race, plus the top 500 finishers receive Arnold 5K medals.

Fairborn girls softball taking registrations

FAIRBORN — The Fairborn Girls Softball Association is now accepting registrations for its fastpitch girls 10U to 18U and slowpitch girls 5-20 leagues. Girls from all communities are welcome.

Registration fee is $60 by Jan. 31, $70 starting March 1, with a $10 discount for additional family members.

In-person registration will take place 1-3 p.m. Jan. 31, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Feb. 6 and 1-3 p.m. Feb. 21 at The Inside Scoop, located at 313 W. Main St.
