Eaton sinks Bellbrook in second half

BELLBROOK — Friday night’s game between Bellbrook and Eaton at Bellbrook High School was a matchup of two Southwestern Buckeye League teams trying to get their season back on track.

After an evenly match first half, Bellbrook (1-4, 0-2 SWBL) struggled to get any offense going. Eaton (2-3, 1-1 SWBL) won 34-7.

Eaton quarterback Lew Bowser finished with 147 yards passing and 80 yards rushing. Damon Willard unofficially had 118 yards running in the game, 112 coming in the second half. Tyrell David had 117 yards receiving on four receptions.

David Vine finished with 94 yards passing and 53 yards rushing for Bellbrook. Connor Oldham had 35 yards on the ground.

Both teams looked to be evenly matched in the first half. Eaton struck first with a 71-yard touchdown pass on its first play from the line of scrimmage. Bellbrook responded on its ensuing drive when Vine found Rye Bennett on a short pass that turned into a 66-yard touchdown. Eaton scored one more time to take the 13-7 lead into halftime.

Bellbrook had two interceptions and a fumble in the game.

The Golden Eagles take on Valley View at 7 p.m. next Friday at Bellbrook stadium.

Xenia edges out Troy

TROY — Xenia was one touchdown away from forcing a running clock on Troy.

What looked like an early blowout turned into an instant classic.

Down 24-7 at halftime and 38-14 in the fourth quarter, the Troy football team put up a furious — almost heroic — charge late, scoring 28 points in the fourth quarter, but a Troy drive that began with 2:09 to play in the game was cut short by a Xenia interception, allowing the Buccaneers to escape with a 45-42 win.

With the win, Xenia improved to 2-3, while Troy fell to 1-4.

A series of mistakes in the form of turnovers, blown coverages and inexcusable penalties — coupled with a huge night from Xenia quarterback Danny Naylor — led to all four of the Buccaneers’ first-half scores as the Buccaneers built a 24-7 halftime lead.

Southeastern blanks Cedarville

SOUTH CHARLESTON – The Cedarville Indians struggled to move the ball all night, as they fell to Southeastern Local High School, 33-0.

On their second drive of the night, quarterback Jacob Gannon was sacked in the end zone for a safety. On the ensuing drive, Southeastern drove 57 yards, scoring on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Trever King to Jay Connor, to go up 9-0.

Austin Lewis came to replace Gannon, who was injured. The offensive failed to get rolling, gaining 25 yards in the first half. Cedarville had a total of 25 yards on offense, compared to Southeastern’s 111. The Indians fumbled the ball four times, losing it twice. Running back Mitchell Depp had 24 yards on seven carries, and Lewis had five rushes for -18 yards.

Gannon later returned to the game.
