Naylor leads Buccaneers to 38-21 win

XENIA— Danny Naylor tossed for 333 yards and five touchdowns, and the host Xenia Buccaneers claimed a 31-21 win over Vandalia Butler, Friday night at Doug Adams Stadium.

Naylor connected on scoring strikes of 61, 25, 25, 10 and 6 yards — two of which were second-half tosses to Meechi Harris — to lead the Bucs to their first win of the season.

Buc defensive back Ryan Johnson iced the game with just over two minutes to go when he returned an interception to the Aviators 6-yard line. He picked off another Aviators pass on Butler’s next possession with just over a minute left to play.

Naylor then took a knee and ran out the clock.

Both teams return to action on the road on Friday. Xenia (1-3) will head north to take on Troy for a 7 p.m. contest. Vandalia Butler (3-1) also is on the road. The Aviators play at Springfield, also at 7.

(Due to the late finish of this game, we were unable to interview coaches Bob DeLong of Xenia, or Greg Bush of Vandalia Butler before presstime.)

Springboro deflates Beavercreek

BEAVERCREEK – One play at the end of the third quarter in Friday night’s contest between Beavercreek (3-1) and Springboro (3-1) seemed to swing momentum in favor of the visiting Panthers, who went on to take a 28-0 victory.

Despite struggling to move the ball most of the first half, the Beavers came out of the locker room only down by a single Panther touchdown (an Alex Feldman reception in the second quarter). Beavercreek responded to the deficit by putting together a methodical run-heavy drive that ate up most of the third quarter. The 79-yard drive looked poised to swing momentum back in favor of the home team.

But on fourth down from the Springboro 1-yard line, the Beavercreek offensive line couldn’t get a push and running back Tim Bradshaw was swarmed under by Panthers.

The visitors took over on downs and despite nearly getting caught in their own end zone for a safety, the Panthers marched 99 yards right back down the field to take a deflating 14-0 lead with about nine minutes left in the game.

From there, the Beavers just couldn’t get much offense or defense going and succumbed to late Springboro touchdown runs courtesy of Elijah Cunningham and Liam Foley.

Bradshaw finished the night with 102 yards rushing. Cunningham threw 16-for-28 on the night for 226 yards passing.

Mechanicsburg 61, Cedarville 6

CEDARVILLE – The Cedarville Indians were outplayed on both sides of the ball Friday night, as they fell to the visiting Mechanicsburg team, 61-6.

Cedarville had no answer for Mechanicsburg quarterback Kaleb Romero, who played a perfect first half, completing all 12 of his passes for 195 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran the ball well, carrying it five times for 102 yards and two touchdowns, including one 54-yarder.

Mechanicsburg’s defense also played well in the first half, limiting Cedarville to 77 yards of offense, 40 of which came on one run by Cedarville quarterback Jacob Gannon. He went into halftime one of seven for 10 yards and finished the game five of 14 for 85 yards and one touchdown.

Cedarville (1-3) will look to bounce back next week on the road against South Charleston Southeastern Local High School.
