BEAVERCREEK — Going up against a solid Beavercreek girls varsity team that was playing its first game of the season, youthful and banged up Xenia probably hoped the hosts might have had some rust left in their cleats.
Instead, the Buccaneers met up with a Beavercreek squad that dominated the match for a convincing 7-0 win, Monday evening at Beavercreek High.
Senior midfielder Sierra Peacock scored two goals and had an assist, junior forward Ally Applin scored a goal and was credited with two assists, Taylor Ulrich had a goal and an assist, Alli Quillen, Hannah Kim and Molly Sedlock each scored a goal, Bronte Flannery added an assist, and Claire Fisher was credited with three assists for the Lady Beavers (1-0).
“We like to be able to possess the ball well and to get our players opportunities either to advance the ball or to get off a shot on goal,” Beavercreek coach Steve Popp said. “We worked a lot on knocking the ball around, and getting our players open chances to get off a shot on goal.”
Unofficially, Beavercreek launched 29 shots on goal against the Buccaneers and had 17 corner kick opportunities.
Xenia did not get off a shot on goal for the entire contest.
“Right now, we’re just really short of players,” Xenia coach Jim Lamb said. “We have several key injuries to players who would likely start for us, and that’s really hurting us. Yeah, it’s good to play a really good team like Beavercreek early on in the season, to see where you’re at and what you need to work on. But at the same time, it’s not a good time for us to have five potential starters sitting on the sideline the whole game.”
Seniors Catlin Hollen and Lexi Gibson, and sophomores Marissa Babb, Adrianna Winston and Amara Shepherd were all listed as injured for Monday’s game.
Beavercreek plays at Westerville North for a 12:30 p.m. game on Saturday. They’ll return home next Monday to host neighborhood rival Carroll.
Xenia (0-2) hits the road for its next two games. They play at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Sidney before closing out the week’s schedule with a 7:30 p.m. Saturday night game at Greenon.
BOYS: Beavercreek 3, Xenia 1
In the night’s boys varsity soccer game, Beavercreek pulled away for a win.
It was a tough game. After the first half, the Beavers were ahead of the Bucs 1-0. With 19 minutes left in the second half, Shon Dyamond tied it up for the Bucs. By the end of the game the Beavers lead 3-1. Both teams played extremely hard.
Coach Keenan Mikal of Xenia said that he was happy with Xenia’s effort, adding that they needed to gain their confidence. Coach John Guiliano of Beavercreek complimented Xenia on its tremendous improvement.
Both teams played their hardest and Beavercreek’s team depth helped earn the win in the end.
The Buc boys are back in action tonight when they host Sidney for a 6 p.m. game at Doug Adams Stadium. Beavercreek’s boys squad returns to action at 7 p.m. Saturday when they play at Sycamore, in Blue Ash.
