FAIRBORN — In approximately five weeks, Air Force officials will kick off the 19th annual Air Force Marathon starting on the grounds of the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
Drawing runners from around the world to compete in the full marathon, half marathon or the 10K and 5K races, the event features historical locations on base and celebrates Air Force aviation history and heritage.
“The Air Force marathon is an absolutely incredible event that brings together runners of all ages and abilities” Race Director Rob Aguiar said. “The energy, the excitement and the history of the race is unbelievable and it’s what keeps attracting runners year after year.”
For people interested in experiencing the marathon without having to run it, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities available.
The marathon office is looking for volunteers to manage a variety of important functions at the Sports and Fitness Expo, and on marathon day, including handing out shirts, bibs and providing entertainment for the more than 15,000 runners who will be participating in the race.
“The Air Force Marathon is such an exciting event to be a part of,” Volunteer Coordinator Jeanette Monaghan of the Air Force Marathon said. “A lot of people don’t know how festive the atmosphere is — it’s contagious. Ninety-five percent of our volunteers have volunteered with us before, and 25 percent having been volunteering for more than 15 years.”
Fans can also experience the race and cheer on the runners at the Fly Zone, a spectator area located off of Main Street in downtown Fairborn.
The Air Force Marathon, presented by Northrop Grumman, USAA and Boeing, will be Saturday, Sept.19. The Sports & Fitness Expo is held at Wright State University’s Nutter Center and will be Sept. 17 and 18. The 5K race will be held at Wright State University on Sept. 18. The event will feature a Gourmet Pasta Dinner and Breakfast of Champions on Friday, Sept. 18.
