XENIA – Patricia Barker and Elizabeth Bogen were named Cameo of Caring Nurses at Greene Memorial Hospital and Soin Medical Center for 2014.

The Cameos of Caring Award honor exceptional bedside nurses who work at acute care hospitals. The program was established in 1999. The award recognizes registered nurses who exemplify wisdom, advocacy, and caring in professional nursing, representing the best in the profession.

Patricia Barker, an Emergency Department nurse at Soin, grew up in Waynesville and now resides in Huber Heights. She received her Associate Degree in Nursing from Sinclair Community College and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Indiana Wesleyan University.

Inspired to become a nurse Barker said, “I chose nursing to make a difference in patient and families lives. My mother was diagnosed with cancer and I needed to be able to provide all the information with the understanding of treatment plans as well as how to support her.”

She has served as an emergency room nurse for more than 12 years with Kettering Health Network.

Barker says that it not only takes expertise in the field but, “A nurse should become an expert with emotional, spiritual and caring to meet the needs of your patients and families.”

Her husband, Greg, is a firefighter and they have two children and four grandchildren. When she isn’t nursing patients she loves to garden and landscape.

Also receiving the recognition is Elizabeth Bogan, an Emergency Department nurse at Greene Memorial, who resides in Xenia.

A Greene County native she knew early on in life she wanted to be a nurse and that has transformed into a 20-year nursing career. Elizabeth began her nursing education with Kettering College of Medical Arts and is currently working on bachelor of science in nursing from Indiana Wesleyan University.

“My mother was a nurse and she is who inspired me most,” said Bogan.

Elizabeth believes being a good nurse requires being, “Comfortable in your skills as a nurse and be willing to adapt your practice to each patient. You have to be quick thinking.”

When Bogan isn’t working she enjoys spending time with her family going to their activities such as 4-H, swimming, baseball and much more. She and her husband have been married 15 years and have four children.

Greene Memorial Hospital and Soin Medical Center recognized these two nurses last in 2014 and will soon announce its honorees for 2015.
