Raiders Sign 6-8 Player from Denmark

Daniel Mortensen, a 6-8, 225-pound forward from Islev, Denmark, has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball and attend Wright State University this fall, WSU head coach Billy Donlon announced.

Playing the last two years for the Horsholm 79ers, the 20-year-old averaged 8.4 points and 4.8 rebounds his first year and 13.5 points with 5.2 rebounds in 2014-15. Last winter, he shot 44% from the field, 36% from three and 83% from the line. He also scored more than 20 three times, including a high 25 points. He played this summer for the Denmark National Team.

“We are excited to have Daniel join our program,” Donlon said. “He will provide depth inside and has the skill set to score both inside and out. Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance Trevor Doll has worked tirelessly for the past several months with the NCAA. A great deal of thanks goes out to him for his effort.”

Mortensen will be a freshman for the Raiders this coming season and is eligible immediately. The Raiders will start team practice in October with the season opening on November 13 at the Northern Illinois Tournament in DeKalb, IL.

Ferguson Adds Wendling to Staff

Jim Wendling, formerly the head coach at Canisius, has been named the director of operations for the Wright State women’s soccer program, head coach Patrick Ferguson announced today.

During his rookie season at Canisius, Wendling was named the 2008 Anaconda Sports MAAC Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year as he guided the Griffs to 11 wins overall and a 6-3 league mark, which allowed the team to qualify for the conference’s postseason tournament for the first time since 1994. After recording 13 wins and earning a berth into the MAAC Tournament in 2009, Wendling led CC to a school-record 14 victories in 2010 and its first-ever MAAC regular-season championship. The 2010 season also saw Canisius earn an appearance in the MAAC Championship game, where the team lost to Siena in overtime. The Golden Griffins won 62 games, including 30 in league play, under Wendling.

“I am very pleased to add Jim to our staff. He brings a wealth of experience which will help grow our program,” Ferguson said. “He is a man of integrity and I look forward to working with him.”

Wendling’s teams were also successful off the field as a total of 38 players earned MAAC All-Academic honors since 2008. Additionally, the women’s soccer program at Canisius received six straight National Soccer Coaches Association of American Team Academic Awards.

Wendling started his head coaching career as the Miami Valley School boys head coach from 1990-92. He also served as the assistant head coach of the Alter High School girls team before moving on to Wittenberg in 1993.

Wendling, who is licensed through the NSCAA and USSF, also served as the NAIA Region IX women’s soccer chairperson. He graduated from the University of Dayton with a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s in physical education. He and his wife, Linda, have two children. His son, Justin, received his undergraduate degree from Wheeling Jesuit University and his graduate degree from Boston College, and now resides in Boston, Massachusetts. His daughter, Abby, resides in Dayton with his son-in-law, Andy, and granddaughter, Sophie.
