Xenia Scouts pitchers held their opponents hitless and the team’s catcher scored two runs in Tuesday’s 6-0 Red win over Blue in Tuesday’s Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League All-Star Game, held at Prasco Field in Mason.

Quentin McGrath started on the mound with Scouts catcher David Gauntt behind the plate.

McGrath faced three Blue Team batters and retired all three — two flyouts and a groundout — to begin the game.

Scouts teammate Benjamin Aldridge then pitched the second inning for the Red team. Facing the middle of the Blue Team’s order, Aldridge recorded two straight strikeouts and then got the third batter to groundout to retire the side in order.

In the fourth inning, Gauntt singled with one out, advanced to second on a single by Red teammate Tyler Bires of Lorain, moved over to third on a single by the Hamilton Joe’s Jake Simmerman, then he and Bires scored the first runs of the game on a single by Lorain County Ironman Jeff Edwards.

Xenia’s pitcher John Crawford saw four Blue batters in the fifth inning. He walked one, fanned another and had one flyout to right and another hit into a force play to end the inning with the Red team still out in front, 2-0.

The Red team capitalized again in the bottom of the fifth inning.

First, Hamilton’s Andy Young showed why he’s the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League’s home run leader. The Indiana State infielder smacked a solo home run to put the Red team out in front 3-0, but they weren’t done scoring.

Gauntt drew a one-out walk, Bires advanced him with a single, and then Simmerman smacked yet another Hamilton Joe’s home run in the inning to make it 6-0 in favor of the Red team.

Scouts infielders Kyle Carnahan and Lee Solomon got into the game in the sixth inning. Carnahan subbed in for home run leader Young at third base; Solomon took over for Hamilton’s Jackson Boyce at second base.

There was a moment of confusion by the GLSCL online website scorekeeper in the inning as well: Robert Greenman of the Grand Lake Mariners wears the number 15, as does Xenia pitcher Quentin McGrath. So when Greenman went in to catch in the sixth, the scorekeeper momentarily had McGrath behind the plate.

That would’ve meant McGrath would’ve started the game as the Red team’s pitcher, then would have donned the catcher’s Tools of Ignorance to catch Grand Lake’s Damien Helm!

Carnahan ground into a 6-4-2 double play in the seventh inning, and Solomon groundout to second in the eighth in the two Scouts’ only at-bats.

The Red team collected 12 hits to three for the losing Blue squad.

Xenia, currently in third place overall in the GLSCL, returns to regular season action on Saturday when they’ll play the Galion Graders at Heise Park for a 7:05 p.m. game. The Scouts will then conclude their regular season with a 4:05 p.m. contest against the Graders, also at Galion’s Heise Park.

With a 23-15 overall record, just 2.5 games out of first place with two games left to play, and currently 3.5 games ahead of the sixth-place team in the league (the top 6 teams earn a spot in the post season) the Scouts will likely be in the playoffs.

While various teams still have several games to play before the regular season standings are finalized, as of Tuesday the Scouts would finish third in the league and would host the sixth-place team (presently the Licking County Settlers) on Wednesday, July 29 at Grady’s Field on the Athletes In Action Sports Complex.
