Remembering: Nathanael Greene

GREENE COUNTY – Though historians sometimes disagree on the spelling of his first name, no one disagrees that his man was second only to George Washington in the War of American Independence. He was born in Rhode Island in 1742. General Greene fought in battles in North and South Carolina during 1780-82 A comrade-in-arms of General Washington, he and Washington are the only two generals to serve through the entire war. He distinguished himself on the battlefields of Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth. He died in 1876 at the age of 44 in Savannah.
