FAIRBORN — The Fairborn girls tennis team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over host Urbana Aug. 23.
Senior Paige Murry notched her first win this season at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1 win over Kim Asper, while McKayla Lyons beat Hannah Laucke, 6-2, 6-1, at third singles. The No. 2 doubles team of Rita Chien and Caitlin Sanders clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ashley Dunn and Heather Packer.
“I was extremely happy with the play of Paige and McKayla tonight,” Coach Doug Coy said. “They both came right out and took the match to their opponents, and neither ever really let her opponent really get into the match. We mixed the doubles up tonight, trying to find a combination that would click together and we had some good results.”
Tiana Thomas had a tough night as at third singles, 1-6, 1-6 to Aimee Asper at second singles. The first doubles team of Amanda Wilson and Katelyn Byczkowski lost, 5-7, 6-4, 5-10 to Rachel Pickering and Bree Stouffer. The Fairborn pair jumped out to 5-2 lead in the first set but the Urbana team won five straight in the first set and then jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set. Wilson and Byczkowski then won five straight to set up a winner-take-all super-tiebreaker.
“Overall I was happy with our doubles play tonight, especially considering that this was the first time for each pair to play together,” Coy said. “While both teams definitely had their fine moments, where they showed what they were capable of doing, they also had moments where they looked like they need lots and lots of practice. I think if we can leave these teams together they will reduce the bad periods and have more and more good stretches.”
In reserve action, Abby Lafferty and Caitlin Bowling teamed up again to win, 8-2. Makayla Byndom and Melissa Le dropped a 5-7 decision, and Rita Chien won a singles match, 8-1.
Fairborn is 2-4 and hosted Tippecanoe Aug. 24.
