FAIRBORN — Voters will elect three individuals to fill seats on Fairborn City Council Nov. 3 in a race between four candidates. Elected individuals will serve for a four year term.

Current council members include Rob Hoffman, Deputy Mayor Paul Keller, Marilyn McCauley, Tim Steininger and Donna Wilson; McCauley and Steininger were sworn into office in 2011, and are both hoping to continue their service as council members. They are joined in the race by Clinton Allen and Terry Burkert.

Clinton Allen

Allen is a co-owner of The Inside Scoop Ice Cream Shop in Fairborn, and holds a BS degree in organization management, and associate degrees in security management and human resource management. After 28 years in the U.S. Air Force, he retired with honorable service as a chief master sergeant. He has been a resident of Fairborn since 1997, serving as a board member for Operation Fairborn Cares and the Downtown Fairborn Betterment Association and committee member of the Fairborn 9-11 Monument Committee and Fairborn Chamber of Commerce.

He feels that his experience as a small business owner allows him to understand the challenges of operating such.

“My experience will help the city create an environment to grow our local small businesses and develop sound solutions to encourage and increase new businesses to our city,” he wrote.

His priorities include fighting the drug problem the city currently faces, and feels that building working relationships with Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Wright State University, neighboring communities and local school district leaders is important, as it would allow better fiscal desicions to be made in relation to moving the city in a forward direction.

Terry Burkert

Burkert grew up in Illinois, and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force upon graduating high school in 1969. He spent his four years of enlistement stationed at varying parts of the world, but later found himself at WPAFB, and decided to call Fairborn home after receiving honorable discharge in 1973. He started his civilian career at WPAFB in 1974, retired in civil service in 2001 and currently works for a contractor at WPAFB.

He stays involved in the community by serving as the chairman on the Mayor’s Beautification Committee, volunteering his time and attending several city-held events, including acting as Santa Claus for the downtown Christmas events.

At a recent Meet the Candidates Night event, he explained that his priorities include establishing stronger relationships with neighboring communities, including WPAFB and WSU, creating a more welcoming environment for incoming businesses, seeing younger citizens get involved in the community and ensuring that the Fire Department has the proper equipment to complete jobs.

“I attend council meetings and citizens’ forums regularly and volunteers at Fairborn’s Christmas in Action … ,” he wrote. “I regularly attends most Fairborn functions, such as the Third of July Block Party, August Sweet Corn Festival … September Car Show and Heels for Heroes Charity race.”

Marilyn McCauley

McCauley retired from the federal government after 32 years of work relating to financial and project performance management. She earned her BSA from WSU and an MSA from Central Michigan University. She owns McManagement Group, a consulting business, and has served on Fairborn City Council for four years with one being the deputy mayor. She additionally co-chaired the Fairborn 9-11 Monument Committee, and has served on numerous non-profit boards within the county.

“I am the right candidate for Fairborn City Council because of the capabilities I can bring to the table. My education degrees, BSA and MSA in business management, has provided me with the tools to understand business, projects, performance, cost analysis and other business aspects of city business,” she wrote

Her priorities include economic development and efficiant code enforcement to eliminate blighted buildings from the community.

“The council and staff have targeted certain regions of the city for focused efforts for development,” she wrote. “Some areas will include commercial business, some areas will include industrial growth and some areas will focus on housing developments. Enhanced and consistent code enforcement is being utilized to rid our city of as many blighted homes and businesses as we can.”

Tim Steininger

Steininger moved to Fairborn in 1986, and became an active citizen early-on, starting with serving as an officer in the Fairborn High School Marching Band parent support group and continuing by being active for milage efforts for the school district and local police and fire departments. He later served on the Fairborn Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and Fairborn Planning Board, and supports the local YMCA. He was appointed to council in 2011, and currently works at the State of Ohio Computer Center. He holds a BA in human sciences, MA in human development and an education specialist degree.

“Experience, teamwork, collaboration and vision … I am running again to make Fairborn the ‘place of choice’ to live, work and play in the Miami Valley,” he wrote. “I want to continue the great teamwork and progress started that will grow Fairborn together.”

His priorities include increasing safety, housing and job retention/creation. During his service on council, the police and fire departments saw new additions, and the community has seen numerous blighted homes taken down. He wishes to continue these efforts, and support cost saving and small business efforts as well as long-term projects to encourage job potential and city growth.
