YELLOW SPRINGS – Madeleine Fix first volunteered with Glen Helen in 2013, and has since lead some hikes and artist workshops. Although she balances a busy schedule and lives outside of the area, she will offer an acoustic ecology hike this weekend.

“I lead sound-walks and stop-motion nature animation workshops at Glen Helen on a volunteer, low-cost basis” Fix said.

As a resident of Columbus, she travels to the Glen as often as her schedule will allow.

“Glen Helen has always been one of my favorite spots in Ohio,” Fix said. “As a child, I visited the Nature Center, and hiked, and always have found it a magical place.”

As an interdisciplinary artist who composes music, makes short films and videos and draws. Her work has been exhibited and music has been performed at venues around the United States. Recent spots include: Pilates & Arts (Los Angeles, Calif.), The Columbus International Film & Video Festival; Paging Columbus (Ohio State University Urban Arts Space; Columbus, Oh.); PLGArts (Brooklyn, N.Y.); Artists’ Television Access (San Francisco, Calif.); La Superette Affordable Art Sale (New York) and Not My Small Diary zine.

She’s written two full-length albums, Turning a Helicopter and The Sliver of Light, and she has composed original music for Douglas Chang’s independent film, Absent Father, distributed by Vanguard Cinema.

Fix, a mother with a young daughter, has been working toward an additional degree in Library Science.

“I don’t have a lot of spare time for art-making these days,” Fix said as she discussed her busy life.

Despite this, Fix has donated her time to lead hikes like this weekend’s Acoustic Ecology Hike and spring/summer animation workshops in the Glen.

“Volunteer time is valued, and it’s a great excuse to take a hike,” Fix said. “Everyone should know about the Glen and the wonderful programs and events. Also, the member art shows, and the great little gift shop.”

Join Fix, 5-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept 26, on the acoustic ecology hike, to collect recordings of nature’s symphony as attendees walk the trails. Following the hike, participants will convene to sample wine and light refreshments as they listen to and discuss their findings.

Registration is required. Visit glenhelen.org to secure a spot on the acoustic ecology hike; costs include $5 for Glen Helen members and $10 for nonmembers.
