WILBERFORCE — The Ohio Attorney General’s Office did some recruiting on Central State University’s campus April 4.

As part of the first Attorney General Day, Mike DeWine and representatives from his office spent several hours on campus talking with students about what the AG does and what jobs are available. While it’s the first official Attorney General Day, looking for potential talent is an ongoing process.

“This is really part of our outreach to recruit people to work at BCI and the Attorney General’s Office,” DeWine said. “One of the things that we like to do when we recruit is to go on college campuses. The whole criminal justice system is always looking for good young people.”

While many associate DeWine’s office with lawyers, that’s not entirely the case.

“We have a ton of lawyers,” DeWine said. “(But) we also have scientists … who are fighting crime. It’s very, very exciting.”

A perfect example of that is the recent case that was solved using a forensic scientist’s facial reconstruction of bones found in Spring Valley Township. The reconstruction helped identify the woman and authorities in Springfield were able to make an arrest.

“It’s very important that we have good people,” DeWine said.

After meeting with his advisory group on diversity and inclusion initiatives, DeWine spent some time leading a panel discussion, while his staff members led various workshops and mock interviews for interested students.

“This is an opportunity for our students and faculty and staff … to be fully engaged with that office,” CSU President Dr. Cynthia Jackson-Hammond said of creating the event. Jackson-Hammond added that it’s not just for criminal justice majors as there are opportunities to work with the AG in many other fields.
