CEDARVILLE —In a pair of college basketball games in Cedarville University’s Callan Athletic Center, the host Cedarville Yellow Jackets men’s and women’s teams each claimed wins over neighboring Wilberforce University on Saturday.
Cedarville closed the first quarter with 25 unanswered points and overwhelmed visiting Wilberforce, 95-42, in non-conference women’s basketball action.
The Yellow Jackets (4-3) have won four straight — all at home.
The two sides were deadlocked 4-4 at the 6:45 mark when CU began its run with a trio of successive three-pointers.
Cedarville knocked down 13-of-26 shots from outside the arc and converted 20-of-26 free throws.
The hosts also controlled the boards, 58-29. Emily Williams matched her career-high with 12 boards.
Ellie Juengel came off the bench to fire in a career-high 16 points in 15 minutes of playing time to lead six players in double figures. It was Juengel’s second career game in double figures. She scored 10 at Ferris State last season.
The other five Yellow Jackets scoring in double figures were all starters.
Regina Hochstetler flipped in 15 points. Baylee Bennett and Breanne Watterworth tallied 14 apiece while Williams and Kaitlyn Holm added 10 each.
“Overall, I’m very pleased. Our defensive intensity has improved. Our toughness on the offensive side has improved. We can take some confidence away from this and keep getting better,” Cedarville coach Kari Hoffman said.
The Jackets are 41-of-49 (.837) from the charity stripe in their last two outings.
Cedarville will host Indianapolis for a 3 p.m. game on Dec. 10, while Wilberforce took on Roosevelt University on Monday night. According to the Wilberforce University website, the next Bulldogs home contest isn’t until Jan. 14, 2017 — a 1 p.m. contest with Berea College.
Jackets men rally past Wilberforce
CEDARVILLE — Patrick Bain scored 19 points and the Yellow Jackets rallied for a 77-69 win over Wilberforce in a non-conference game played Saturday at the Callan Athletic Center.
Bain has now scored 10 or more points in seven straight games.
Cedarville (4-4) finished the game on a 20-6 run after trailing 63-57 midway through the second half.
Neither team led by more than eight points in the contest. Wilberforce (8-5) had its four-game winning streak snapped.
“Justice (Montgomery) made some huge plays late. Pat (Bain), J.C. (Faubion), and Easton (Bazzoli) all did some things well late. It was one of those games where we had to fight, and dig down, and go to work, and our guys did a really good job of that,” Yellow Jackets coach Pat Estepp said.
Bain’s effort paced four players in twin figures. He added five rebounds and a pair of steals.
J.C. Faubion tallied 15 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Easton Bazzoli scored 15 points while Justice Montgomery came through with 12.
The Yellow Jackets controlled the boards, 43-33, and committed just 10 turnovers.
The two teams meet again at Wilberforce on Jan. 17, 2017.
Cedarville plays at 4 p.m. Dec. 10 at St. Joseph’s (Ind.), while Wilberforce’s next home contest will be Jan. 10 against Rio Grande.
