May is mental health month

SPRINGFIELD — Did you know that nutritional imbalances in your diet can make you more susceptible to depression (Food for the Brain, 2012)? That sleep problems may increase risk for developing mental health problems? Or that one in five adults in the United States will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime (NAMI, 2017)? No one is immune to bouts of depression, addictive or risky behaviors, or trauma exposure of any kind — all of which may be triggers for mental health problems.

During the whole month of May, we highlight mental health awareness, education, and services readily available in our community. Mental Health Month is also about reducing the social stigma associated with mental illness and encouraging people to seek help.

Mental health care is important because it is inclusive – it involves everyone! As a community, we must weave together a network of support and awareness all year long so that we can provide the necessary tools to help people who are struggling with mental illness or showing warning signs of it.

As the Mental Health and Recovery Board for Clark, Greene, and Madison Counties, one of our goals is to provide important information and resources related to minimizing the risk of developing or worsening mental illness through prevention and treatment services, access to mental health facilities, peer support, and hotlines.

Greene County has Educational Service Center, Family Violence Prevention Center, Family & Children First, and Housing Solutions. For a full list of all the agencies visit www.mhrb.org.

If you are experiencing thoughts of suicide call 800-273- TALK, 911, or go to the nearest emergency room immediately. If you are experiencing a crisis, text “4HOPE” to 741741.
