Greene County News Report

FAIRBORN — In a surprise announcement Tuesday afternoon, Wright State University announced it was pulling out as host of the first presidential debate.

Outgoing President Dr. David Hopkins cited financial and security concerns as the reason WSU would no longer serve as host. The university needed to raise an estimated $8 million to cover costs associated with hosting the candidates, major players in each party and as many as 3,000 media members.

The Commission on Presidential Debates announced that the Sept. 26 debate will instead be held at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY.

Wright State was named the first host in September.

Since then, Greene County created the Debate Task Team for Greene County, which includes all active chambers with a leader, the Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Greene County commissioners office and leadership from the Cities of Fairborn and Beavercreek.

Hofstra University served very successfully as a presidential debate site in 2012. On Sept. 23, 2015, the Commission announced that Hofstra University had agreed to serve as an alternate site this debate cycle if needed. The Commission looks forward to working with Hofstra once again.
