XENIA TOWNSHIP — Prospective poultry purchasers in Greene County and the greater Dayton area have a new way to test the waters, by way of Rent the Chicken.
The business was founded in 2013 and has affiliate locations throughout the United States and Canada, and now, by way of Bill and Debbie Goessl and their Windy Acre farm near Xenia, local residents can get in on the movement.
The concept is about as simple as the company’s name: Interested parties can rent two laying hens for six months for $400. That price tag includes delivery, setup and retrieval; two laying hens; a mobile chicken coop; 100 pounds of feed and other necessary supplies. At the end of the six months, customers have an option to purchase or return their chickens and the supplies.
According to Bill Goessl, the appeal of the business for some is the “try before you buy” aspect, while for others it’s the regular supply of eggs, which renters get for those six months.
“A lot of people just like the idea of having their own fresh eggs,” he said. “A lot of your eggs in your grocery stores, they could be sitting in a shelf in the back room for up to two months.”
Goessl also offers a “Hatch the Chicken” rental program in which customers receive an incubator and other supplies to hatch chickens. After they hatch, customers take care of the chickens for two weeks before they have an option to either purchase the birds or return them. In all, the five-week “Hatch the Chicken” program costs $175.
Goessl operates within a 50-mile radius of Xenia, including the Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus markets.
