WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE — Brig. Gen. (Dr.) Mark A. Koeniger will assume command of the 711th Human Performance Wing in a ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 28 at the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

He is currently the deputy director of Medical Operations and Research in Falls Church, Virginia. The current commander, Brig. Gen. (Dr.) Timothy T. Jex, will retire after 33 years of service.

As 711 HPW commander, Koeniger will be responsible for advancing human performance and integration for air, space and cyberspace through research, education, consultation and operational support. He will also provide strategic direction for Air Force biotechnology, public health training and aeromedical consultation.

Koeniger was commissioned through Officer Training School after graduating from Louisiana State University and entered the Air Force in 1985. He has served as a family physician, flight surgeon and chief of medical operations, and has commanded the 86th Aerospace Medical Squadron, the 380th Expeditionary Medical Group and the 332th Expeditionary Medical Group. Prior to his current assignment, Koeniger served as the command surgeon at Headquarters Air Force Space Command at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado. He is a senior flight surgeon and navigator with more than 2,100 flying hours, including more than 100 combat hours.

Jex entered the Air Force in 1983 as a distinguished graduate of the ROTC program at Brigham Young University. Prior to his role as 711 HPW commander, he served as the United States Air Forces in Europe command surgeon
