FAIRBORN — Council members Terry Burkert, Marilyn McCauley and Tim Steininger, along with Mayor Dan Kirkpatrick, were sworn in by Fairborn Municipal Court Judge Beth Root to begin and continue their service to the city as the latest Dec. 7 regular council meeting began.

“It’s a great honor,” said Burkert, who is serving his first term on Fairborn City Council. “I think it’s a very humbling experience. I [look forward] to working with the rest of council in trying to make Fairborn a better and friendly city.”

Upon being sworn in, Kirkpatrick expressed his priorities for the city over the next two years of his term, including providing safety and security to the citizens of Fairborn, drawing businesses into the city, building a relationship between council and the Fairborn City School District Board, improving Fairborn’s litter control and preparing its aesthetics for the upcoming presidential debate as well as enhancing the relationship between the city, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Wright State University.

Kirkpatrick wishes to continue citizen forums, the city’s sense of volunteerism and partnership between council and city employees.

“Over the past two years as your mayor, I have been blessed to meet and work with many fantastic, enthusiastic and dedicated Fairborn citizens,” he said during his swearing-in speech. “I have seen numerous projects started and completed by superb city staff and supported by our citizens. We have worked together to accomplish much and will need to continue working together to achieve even more.”

McCauley expressed gratitude in relation to the citizens who voted for and supported her on election day and during her time of service, and wishes to make the city as great as it can be.

“I certainly look forward to working with all the council members over the next four years,” she said. “It’s going to be exciting and I’m ready to do the job and can’t wait to see what we can make happen … There’s a lot of work to be done as we’ve all said many times, but I think we’re all up to it and I look forward to it.”

Steininger expressed similar values.

“I greatly appreciate their support and vote,” he said. “It’s a phenomenal and great privilege to serve the City of Fairborn. We have many, many opportunities to grow and become a great place to work and play. I can’t wait to help out and support the city.”

Burkert, McCauley and Steininger will serve as council members in four-year respective terms, while Kirkpatrick will serve as Fairborn’s mayor over the next two years; he is term-limited and will not be allowed to run once more.

“Our job as your newly-elected city council is to help provide … hope to our Fairborn citizens,” Kirkpatrick said. “The hope that you and your children can live in a city where you feel safe, where you feel prosperous and where you have a future.”
