FAIRBORN – The Fairborn community will have the opportunity to meet the crew that make up the police and fire departments, and see the equipment and departments up close at Public Safety Day, taking place next weekend.
Fire Chief Mike Riley of the Fairborn Fire Department the event is intended to inform the public about what the respective departments provide to the community.
“We hope they (attendees) have a better understanding of the capabilities and responsibilities of both departments and have had a chance to get questions answered,” he said in an email interview. “We provide information to the public related to smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and home safety … We also hope families better understand what it’s like to be a police officer or a firefighter.”
The event will offer tours of the departments, the opportunity to view equipment utilized by both fire and police personell, as well as demonstrations such as an auto extrication and a MedFlight display; fire extinguisher training will also take place. The Fire Department at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base will additionally have a crash truck on display.
“This is a family friendly event that is fun and free to attend … I’m looking forward to another great turnout and the opportunity to meet citizens and guests of the Fairborn community,” Riley said.
The event is held annually, beginning in 2004. However, it did not take place in 2006 due to renovations taking place at the stations. Historically, the open house is held in conjunction with Fire Prevention Week, which is the second week in October. However, Riley said the police department has participated for a number of years.
Hamburgers, hotdogs, chips and drinks will be available. It takes place 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 at Fire Station Two, 2200 Commerce Center Blvd. Riley said parking will be permitted on the Commerce Center during the event.
