Exhibitor’s Hall back

XENIA – The Greene County Fairgrounds houses the Exhibitor’s Hall, which has experienced various changes throughout the years. Formally known as the Dining Hall, the Exhibitor’s Hall will display open-class materials for its second year in a row.

“Open class is for anyone,” Exhibitor’s Hall Supervisor Pat Zering said. “It’s for anyone who wants to enter something they’ve done, whether it’s arts, crafts – maybe they’re a hobbyist of some kind.”

Items displayed in the Exhibitor’s Hall include art, needlework, photography, antiques, floriculture, horticulture and baked items. It is additionally including items from county and non-county residents for the first time this year.

“It allows us to have more entries, and more diversity,” Exhibitor’s Hall Supervisor Kala Benton said. “It will really help with our honey section … It’ll be more competitive.”

It is one of the two buildings that are air-conditioned on the entire grounds, and will be monitored by security. While the fair takes place over the weekend days, the Exhibitor’s Hall will offer crafts and coloring pages for younger fair-goers. Individuals wishing to enter items into the Exhibitor’s Hall have missed this year’s deadline. However, if they wish to do so next year, they can pay a $25 fee and enter up to 25 items with additional items costing $.50 to submit.

“We have some items that are over 100 years old, very unique items,” Benton said. “You get to see all the art and efforts put into the hand-made quilts and needlework. I think it’s fun for kids too.”

Former Supervisor Edwin Stafford oversaw the building when it was still the Dining Hall. He said it used to require catering, and the individual who was responsible for such was taking a loss for doing so. A tornado swept the area in 2000, requiring renovations to the building.

Items now displayed in the Exhibitors Hall formally sat at various corners of the Fairgrounds, and he feels that it is beneficial to have the pieces currently included in the area displayed together.

“This could have been done sooner,” Stafford said. “I hesitated [at first] … It worked out great last year.”

Throughout the additional 51 weeks out of the year that are not considered fair week, the Exhibitor’s Hall is used to host parties, receptions, auctions, meetings and similar events.

Benton said she hopes individuals visiting the Exhibitor’s Hall feel empowered to be involved and create things themselves.

“Once they see what they have, they could feel inspired next year to enter,” Zering said.
