XENIA — The 30th annual Miami Valley Junior Golf Camp, for kids ages 8-17, was held last week at WGC Golf Course.

Fifteen girls and 30 boys learned stroke technique, golf etiquette, the rules of golf and good sportsmanship in their four days at the camp.

Each camper put their new knowledge to work as they played the course each day after practicing at the different learning stations. Long time Camp Director Jim Beaver (a Xenia High grad and later Riverside Stebbins High golf coach for 30 years) put together an outstanding staff, including PGA Pro Travis Mumma from Golf Galaxy, Beavercreek boys head coach Chris Nartker, Stebbins boys coaches Rick Pagniano and Shane Williams, girls assistant golf coach Alex Goecke, Carroll’s recent grad Lauren Dahm and former Trevecca All-American golfer Betsy Beaver, who is now the head golf coach at Westerville North High School.

Contests were held during the third day in each age division in chipping , putting and driving.

A playing demonstration was put on for the final day as the staff showed their golfing skills and the campers became the gallery.

Each camper received a camp T-shirt at the beginning of the camp, and a PGA certificate at the end.

“This was our largest turnout in the last 10 years,” Beaver said. “We had many young boys 10-13 years old as well as a nice mix of girls 8-15 years old. The improvement of their skills is quite great from day one through day four. They grew in self-confidence in hitting the ball, and that showed up each day when they played the course.”

The camp also wants to thank our sponsors: IHS Pharmacy & Wellness; Anderson-Williamson Insurance Agency, LLC; Trophy Sports Center; and WGC Golf Course. Their support is greatly appreciated.

A total of 45 youth golfers turned out this year for the annual Miami Valley Junior Golf Camp, which was held at the WGC Golf Course in Xenia. Camp director Jim Beaver said the turnout was the largest he’d seen in the past 10 years.
