Tornadoes home opener is today

XENIA — The Xenia Tornadoes semi-pro football team is hosting its inaugural home opener Saturday, June 11 at 4 p.m. at the Athletes In Action Sports Complex, 1197 S. Detroit St. The team will face the Kentucky Outlaws. Admission is $5. Kids 12 and under get in free.

OLYMPICS

Ritter’s hosting Olympic sendoff, June 24

BEAVERCREEK — Ritter’s Frozen Custard, on 2531 Dayton Xenia Road, will host an Olympic Trials Send Off celebration for international race walking competitor Susan Randall, of Beavercreek. Randall is one of the top-14 racewalkers in the nation who will be competing in the U.S. Olympic Trials on June 30-July 2 in Charlotte, N.C.

The Send Off will take place from 5-8 p.m. June 24 at Ritter’s. Randall will be on hand, and several area businesses have provided Raffle Baskets for the occasion. Tickets cost $5 for six, $10 for 12. A percentage of the evening’s sales at Ritter’s will go to help support Randall’s Olympic effort.

Rowing Assn. hosting Olympic Day

DAYTON — The Greater Dayton Rowing Association (GDRA) will be hosting a learn to row Olympic Day to attract new rowers to the sport. They are the only local team that will send local athletes to compete at the 2016 Youth National Championships in West Windsor, N.J., in June. GDRA and fellow sponsors will hold the learn to row on June 25. An Olympic athlete will be on-site, and there will be several activities to introduce the sport to the public.

BASEBALL

Scouts game postponed

CINCINNATI — Due to soggy playing field conditions, Friday night’s scheduled Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League game between the visiting Xenia Scouts (2-3) and the host Cincinnati Steam (5-0) has been postponed. The make-up date will be 4:35 p.m. June 30 at Cincinnati Western Hills High School’s Max McLeary Field.

Cincinnati defeated Xenia, 6-4, Thursday night in Xenia. The Scouts’ next game will be 7:05 p.m. Sunday against the Hamilton Joes, at Foundation Field.

FITNESS

Fitness Challenge set for June 18

FAIRBORN — Greene County Public Health is hosting the 13th Annual Family Fitness Challenge 12:30-2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 18 at Central Park located, 222 S. Central Ave.

The Fitness Challenge is designed to motivate youth and families to adopt healthier lifestyles — specifically in the areas of fitness and nutrition. Participants will visit fitness stations, including a bounce house and health information booths from local businesses and organizations, and complete a fitness passport to receive a free prize. Prizes are available while supplies last.

WRESTLING

Fairborn hosting wrestling camp

FAIRBORN — Fairborn High School will host a Champions wrestling camp June 13-16 in the high school gymnasium. The camp will feature 2016 Olympian, NCAA champion and 2015 World Champion Kyle Snyder, four-time NCAA All-American and 2016 NCAA champ Nahshon Garrett, 2016 NCAA All-American and 2015 NCAA champ Nathan Tomasello, two-time NCAA All-American and four-time OHSAA state champ Bo Jordan, and 2016 NCAA wrestling qualifier Jake Ryan.

Sessions will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 13, 14 and 16, and from 3-8 p.m. June 15. Cost is $160 through May 20, $185 thereafter. Deadline to register is June 10. Coaches with five or more wrestlers registered can attend free and will have the opportunity to take part in the camp.

CAMPS

Beavercreek hosting Elite Running/Fitness Camp

BEAVERCREEK — Two sessions of an Elite Running/Fitness Camp, sponsored by the Beavercreek High School Cross Country team, will take place over the summer.

The first session will take place from 9-11 a.m. June 20th and 22nd, and from 6:30-8 p.m. June 23rd. The second session will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. July 18-21. Both sssions will be held at Ferguson Hall on the Beavercreek High School campus (look for large tents and flags).

A Future Olympian Race of Champions will be held at 6:30 p.m. on the last day of each session.

Cost is $25 for one session, $40 for both. Make checks out to: BCCPA.

Runners will learn about proper running form, how to train for distance running, strength/core training using body weight exercises, and fun running games.

Carroll hosting girls basketball camp

RIVERSIDE — Carroll High School will be hosting a girls basketball camp from 9-11:30 a.m. June 13-16 at the high school.

Junior Golf Camp June 20-23

XENIA — WGC Golf Course in Xenia will host its Miami Valley Junior Golf Association 30th Annual Junior Golf Camp, from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m., June 20-23. for boys and girls ages 8-17. Campers will receive daily instruction on stroke technique, golf etiquette, the rules of golf as well as time on the practice tee and putting greens to work on stroke technique. All golfers will also play daily on the WGC Golf Course.

Long time Golf Camp Director and former Stebbins H.S. golf coach Jim Beaver has a fine staff this year including PGA Pros Garay Goecke and Travis Mumma, Beavercreek H.S. varsity boys and girls coaches Chris Nartker and Angela Crum, Stebbins boys golf coaches Rick Pagniano and Shane Williams, Carroll assistant girls golf coach Alex Goecke and former Trevecca Nazarene University All-American Golfer Betsy Beaver, who is now the varsity girls golf coach at Westerville North High School.

Play it Forward Golf Outing June 18

XENIA — The Annual Play it Forward golf outing, hosted by the Xenia High School Class of 1973, is scheduled for a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Saturday, June 18 at Sebastian Hills Golf Club on Knollhaven Road. The outing will include a light breakfast, a full picnic-style lunch and beverages, in addition to prizes and raffles. The event is open to the public with an early registration discount applied until June 1.

The goal of the fundraiser and scholarship award is to give back to current XHS graduates in need. The XHS Class of ’73 will award its third $4,000 scholarship to a deserving 2016 XHS graduate at the Awards Assembly in May. Scholarship monies are acquired from hole sponsorships ($100), title sponsors (ranging from $250 – $1000), monetary/gift donations and, of course, golfers.
