FAIRBORN — Senior pitcher Jesse Scholtens and junior catcher Sean Murphy were both selected during Friday’s Major League Baseball Draft.

Murphy was drafted by the Oakland A’s in Friday’s third round with the 83rd pick. The Centerville product hit .287 with six home runs, 34 RBI and 38 runs scored despite missing six weeks due to an hand injury. In league play, he knocked in 17 in 17 games and scored 18 runs.

He was a First Team All-League honoree in 2015 as he hit .329 with four home runs, 36 RBI and 52 runs scored. In 2014, he was named to the league’s All-Freshman Team as he hit .301 with four home runs, 35 RBI and 39 runs scored.

Murphy is the first Raider position player to be drafted since second baseman Aaron Fields was chosen by the Cleveland Indians in the 42nd round of the 2010 draft. He is the second-highest WSU player ever drafted, only behind pitcher Brian Anderson, who was selected with the third overall pick by the California Angels in 1993.

Scholtens was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the ninth round with the 264th pick.

Scholtens (Fairfield, Calif. Rodriguez HS) was a First Team All-Horizon League honoree this season as he led the league in starts with 16 and in innings pitched with 109.2 while tying for the league lead in wins with a record of 10-1. He finished second in strikeouts with 95 and third in both earned run average at 2.95 and in opposing batting average at .220. In league play, he went 6-1 with a 2.17 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 62.1 innings.

He pitched the first perfect game in school history on March 11 with a 1-0 win at Dayton, striking out a career-high 12 in the process. He struck out nine at Youngstown State on April 22 and eight on three other occasions, including at North Carolina State on February 26.

It is the first time WSU has had two players drafted in the same year since Greg Robinson (Arizona Diamondbacks 32nd round) and Aaron Fields (Cleveland Indians 42nd round) were chosen in 2010.

The two selections also mark just the second time ever that the program has had two players picked in the first 10 rounds. The first time occurred in 2008 when first baseman Jeremy Hamilton was chosen in the fifth round by the Philadelphia Phillies (166th overall) and shortstop and current Raider pitching coach Justin Parker was picked in the sixth round by the Diamondbacks (198th overall).

Wright State has now had 26 players drafted all-time, starting with Raider Hall of Famer Bob Grote, who was picked in the 12th round by the New York Mets.

Scholtens was selected by San Diego Friday afternoon in the Major League Baseball draft. He was drafted by the Padres in the ninth round with the 264th pick.
