HIGH SCHOOL

Wetzel named Official of the Year

COLUMBUS — The Ohio High School Athletic Association named Richard Wetzel, of Bellbrook, the 2015-‘16 Girls Swimming and Diving Active Official of the Year. According to the OHSAA, the 18 officials (one for each OHSAA-sanctioned sport) were “selected because of their contributions to current interscholastic officiating.”

The officials will be recognized as part of the OHSAA Officials Hall of Fame Banquet, which will take place Saturday, June 11 at the Columbus Airport Marriott hotel.

CAMPS

Wittenberg hosting Track & Field Camp

SPRINGFIELD — Wittenberg University is hosting at Track & Field Camp on June 27-29, for student athletes in grades 7-12. Resident cost (including lodging, tuition, meals and a T-shirt) is $325, commuter cost (tuition, meals and T-shirt) is $285. Athletes will receive expert instruction in sprints, hurdles, jump and throws from college coaches throughout the Midwest.

Carroll hosting girls basketball camp

RIVERSIDE — Carroll High School will be hosting a girls basketball camp from 9-11:30 a.m. June 13-16 at the high school.

Session one is for girls in grades 2-5; session two is for girls in grades 6-9. Cost is $60 if you pre-register; $65 the first day of camp. To register online, go to: www.carrollhs.org/2016summercamps. Send email to [email protected] for more information.

Junior Golf Camp June 20-23

XENIA — WGC Golf Course in Xenia will host its Miami Valley Junior Golf Association 30th Annual Junior Golf Camp, from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m., June 20-23. for boys and girls ages 8-17. Campers will receive daily instruction on stroke technique, golf etiquette, the rules of golf as well as time on the practice tee and putting greens to work on stroke technique. All golfers will also play daily on the WGC Golf Course.

Long time Golf Camp Director and former Stebbins H.S. golf coach Jim Beaver has a fine staff this year including PGA Pros Garay Goecke and Travis Mumma, Beavercreek H.S. varsity boys and girls coaches Chris Nartker and Angela Crum, Stebbins boys golf coaches Rick Pagniano and Shane Williams, Carroll assistant girls golf coach Alex Goecke and former Trevecca Nazarene University All-American Golfer Betsy Beaver, who is now the varsity girls golf coach at Westerville North High School.

Wood bat tournament set for June

STRUTHERS — The Bob Cene Baseball Complex will host an all-Ohio wood bat baseball tournament for teams with players ages 16-18, June 22 thru June 26. Contact Ken Quinn 330-719-0581 for information.

GOLF

Play it Forward Golf Outing June 18

XENIA — The Annual Play it Forward golf outing, hosted by the Xenia High School Class of 1973, is scheduled for a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Saturday, June 18 at Sebastian Hills Golf Club on Knollhaven Road. The outing will include a light breakfast, a full picnic-style lunch and beverages, in addition to prizes and raffles. The event is open to the public with an early registration discount applied until June 1.

The goal of the fundraiser and scholarship award is to give back to current XHS graduates in need. The XHS Class of ’73 will award its third $4,000 scholarship to a deserving 2016 XHS graduate at the Awards Assembly in May. Scholarship monies are acquired from hole sponsorships ($100), title sponsors (ranging from $250 – $1000), monetary/gift donations and, of course, golfers.

Junior Golf League starts June 29

XENIA — WGC Golf Course will also have its Wednesday Junior Golf League starting at 10:45 a.m. June 29. This nine-hole league will continue each Wednesday through July. Golfers with some playing experience are welcome to compete. The league was started back in 1975 by Jim Beaver and Garay Goecke who will supervise play each week. FITNESS

Fitness Challenge set for June 18

FAIRBORN — Greene County Public Health is hosting the 13th Annual Family Fitness Challenge 12:30-2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 18 at Central Park located, 222 S. Central Ave.

The Fitness Challenge is designed to motivate youth and families to adopt healthier lifestyles — specifically in the areas of fitness and nutrition. Participants will visit fitness stations, including a bounce house and health information booths from local businesses and organizations, and complete a fitness passport to receive a free prize. Prizes are available while supplies last.
