Carroll sweeps GCL Coed Track titles

MIDDLETOWN — The Carroll High School boys and girls track & field teams both claimed Greater Catholic League Coed Division titles this week. For the boys, it was their eighth year in a row to claim a GCLC title. After finishing as GCLC runners up the past two years, this is the Carroll girls’ first title since 2004.

Patriots sophomore Sam Janson was named Boys GCLC Track Athlete of the Year after winning the 100-meter dash, 200 dash, 400 and running the anchor leg for the winning 1,600 relay team. Other Carroll event winners were: Daniel LaJeunesse (300 hurdles); Karl Grossman (3,200); Sean Pauley (Long Jump and the High Jump); Andy Lebamoff (Pole Vault); Janson, Stafford Stevens, Dante Porter and Nikhil Sample (1,600 Relay)

Senior Christina Kallet was anemd the GCL Field Athlete of the Year. She won the Pole Vault, finished fourth in the mile run, was third in the 800, and finished first, with Haley Sabo, Nyanjok Mawein and Julia Barbera, in the 1,600 relay. Other Carroll girls winners were: Barbera (High Jump); and Sabo (Long Jump).

Carroll won Long Jump, High Jump and Pole Vault in both the boys and girls competitions.

Five Cedarville players join Dutch Lions

DAYTON — The Dayton Dutch Lions Football Club is excited to announce the addition of five Cedarville University players to the 2016 PDL roster. Paulo Pinto, Paul Messerly, Bradley Schluter, John Schwien and Connor Gilmour all helped the Yellow Jackets achieve a 15-4-2 record and a strong run in the NSCAA Division II Championship Tournament.

“We are very excited with these additions to our roster, “ Dayton’s coach Sid van Druenen said. “They are used to competing at a high level both in the college game as in the PDL and I am looking forward to working with them.”

Pinto, is a Goalkeeper who is originally from Sao Jose dos Campos in Brazil. In his three seasons with the Yellow Jackets he played in 40 games, starting all 21 games this past season.

Messerly, a transfer from University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, is an attack-minded full back that just concluded his senior year with the Yellow Jackets, tallying three goals and one assist in the past season. In the two years with the team, Messerly appeared in all 40 games.

Schluter, from Centerville, played for Cincinnati State before transferring to Cedarville University where he played his first season this year, appearing in all 21 games while tallying three assists. Schluter, played PDL for the Cincinnati Dutch Lions in 2014 and had an important role in the team qualifying for the conference playoffs.

Schwien, a transfer from Gordon College in Massachusetts is a midfielder that just finished his first year with the Yellow Jackets, tallying one goal and six assists, for a total of eight points, in 21 games.

Gilmour, who produced a record-setting career at Warren Howland High School, scoring a school-record 75 goals in four years, earning him among others, an All-Ohio Division I First Team selection and All-American Conference player of the year, has been a center forward for the Yellow Jackets for four years. Having to sit out his first year due to a leg injury, Gilmour went on to score 12 goals in 2013, 14 goals in 2014 and an amazing 17 goals in 2015 earning him several awards throughout the past three years. This past season, Gilmour earned a spot on the NSCAA Division II All-American Third team and the CCA Division II All-America Third Team

Dynamo lose home opener

DAYTON — Lansing United players scored goals in the 54th and 85th minute to record a 2-0 win over the Dayton Dynamo on Friday night. Dayton is now 0-2 thus far. Lansing United was playing its first game of the season.
