Wenzler, Nickson Receive Horizon League Golf Honors

INDIANAPOLIS — Ryan Wenzler and Cody Nickson of the Wright State golf team were recognized as the Horizon League announced its golf postseason awards Thursday night. Wenzler was selected to the First Team while Nickson was named to the Second Team.

Wenzler (Centerville) has posted a team-best 73.15 round average this season, with 10 of his 26 rounds being par or under par. The junior earned medalist honors in two tournaments, winning the Northern Kentucky Collegiate Classic during the fall with a three-round score of 203 and is coming off of winning the Earl Yestingmeier Invitational in Muncie, Ind., last weekend with a three-round score of 214.

Named the Horizon League Golfer of the Week on Tuesday following his performance at the Yestingsmeier Invitational, Wenzler’s top round of the season was a 64 in the second round at NKU and he shot under 70 two more times, carding a 68 in the opening round of the Marshall Invitational in September and shot a 69 in the first round of the Yestingsmeier Invitational.

Along with the two first-place finishes, Wenzler tied for fourth at the Murray State Invitational and was 13th at both the Marshall and Wright State Invitationals.

Nickson (Stow Munroe Falls) was second on the squad with a 73.73 round average and was par or under par in 11 of his 26 rounds. The senior tied for third at the Northern Kentucky Collegiate Classic with a three-round score of 211 and tied for seventh at the Wright State Invitational with a three-round score of 220. Nickson’s top round of the year was a 70, which he accomplished four times.

The opening round of the Horizon League Championships is set for Friday at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The three-round tournament concludes on Sunday with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Roman named to Brooks Wallace watch list

Wright State baseball junior Mitch Roman is one of 54 players selected to the initial 2016 watch list for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award, it was announced on Thursday.

The award, sponsored by Mizuno, honors the nation’s top shortstop and will be presented as part of the annual Night of Champions celebration on July 2 in Lubbock, Texas.

Roman (Fishers, Ind. Hamilton Southeastern) is currently among the Horizon League leaders in runs scored (26), hits (42), triples (3), walks (16) and stolen bases (17) while hitting .309 with a .391 on-base percentage. He has committed just six errors in 198 fielding chances this season and has been involved in 28 double plays in 36 games.

Roman was a First-Team All-Horizon League honoree in 2015 as he hit .339 with a team-high 86 hits and added 41 RBI and 47 runs scored. He was also chosen to the league All-Tournament Team as he hit .429 with seven runs scored in four games as WSU claimed the championship and to the NCAA Champaign All-Regional Team as he hit .375 with three RBI and three runs scored as the Raiders finished second to host Illinois.

Cedarville hosting Make-A-Wish reveal, Saturday

CEDARVILLE — For the first time in program history, the Cedarville University Athletic Department has been granted the privilege of hosting a Make-A-Wish® Wish Reveal event. CU raised the most dollars among the eight Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) institutions during the 2014-15 season.

A Wish Reveal is a celebration for a child who learns the details of his/her one true wish. As part of this NCAA Division II national initiative, each year schools and conferences that raise the average cost of a wish will be provided an opportunity to host a Wish Reveal or Delivery event. Led by the fund raising efforts of its Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the Yellow Jackets raised the most money in the G-MAC this year. CU will be one of 37 Division II institutions who earned the opportunity to host a Wish Reveal or Delivery this year.

The Yellow Jackets will host their Wish Reveal on Saturday, April 23, 2016 before the softball and baseball doubleheaders against Ohio Valley University at 11:45 a.m. Cedarville will host Payton, 15, and her family as they learn more details about Payton’s Wish. She will become a part of the Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana Chapter family that has set a new record with 916 wishes granted in one year.

The Cedarville SAAC raised $1,740 for Make-A-Wish® in 2014-15. Overall, Division II schools throughout the country raised more than $605,000 for Make-A-Wish® during the 2014-15 academic year, exceeding $600,000 for the first time in the 13-year partnership between NCAA Division II and Make-A-Wish®. As a division, the $605,000 exceeded the previous year’s efforts by $37,000.
