Norman goes for record in Vandalia

The International Paralympic Committee recently approved a 1,500-meter event to be held at Saturday’s Vandalia Butler Track Invitational. They shortened the mile run event in order to give Xenia Christian senior Grace Norman a shot at bettering her current world record in the 1,500. That distance is the standard length for paralympic competitions.

Norman is the current T-44 class (below knee amputee) paralympic world record holder in the women’s 800-meter and 1,500-meter runs. She also has the American record in those events, plus the 400 run.

The Xenia Christian runner’s current world-record time in the 1,500 is 4:58.68, which she set in a meet where she was the only competitor, last season in Indianapolis, Ind. Norman will be running against a field of able-bodied high school competitors with a chance to better her existing mark, while running closer to home.

She won’t have long to spend in Vandalia, however. Norman has been cast as “Noodler,” a peg-legged pirate in Xenia Christian’s high school musical of Peter Pan. The show starts April 15, with performances scheduled April 16, 22-23.
