Norman wins in Florida, headed to Rio

SARASOTA, Florida — Xenia Christian senior Grace Norman clinched a spot on the United States Paralympic team with her first-place finish at Sunday’s CAMTRI Para-triathlon American Championships. She finished the 750-meter swim, 18-mile bike race and 5-mile run with a time 0f 1 hour, 6 minutes, and 39 seconds, nearly three minutes faster than the second-place finisher in her PT-4 division.

Athletes from Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Venezuala, and the U.S. competed in the races. Team USA was well represented with over 30 athletes racing in five different disability classes for men and women. Grace Norman established herself as the lead female athlete from the start of the swim and led each leg.

With the win, Norman secured her position for the Rio Paralympic Games of 2016. Rio selections for the paratriathlon are based on an international ranking system. Points are earned through competing in International Triathlon Union (ITU) – sanctioned triathlons during the designated Paralympic period. The greatest number of points are earned at the World Championships in which Norman took a silver medal. Then, the next highest points are earned at the various continental championships.

Taking Gold in Sarasota will keep Norman ranked second in the world among PT4 paratriathlon athletes and will ensure that she will be one of the seven athletes to receive an automatic bid for the Rio 2016 Paralympic triathlon. Team USA did very well at the Continental Championships, taking eight out of the possible 10 gold medals.

Baseball

Scholtens throws perfect game

DAYTON — Jesse Scholtens pitched the first perfect game in Wright State baseball history, and the offense pushed across a run in the sixth, as the Raiders defeated Dayton 1-0 Friday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Stadium.

It was quite a pitcher’s duel between Scholtens and Flyer starter Mason Kutruff for the first five innings as Scholten retired all 15 batters he faced, striking out nine, while Kutruff shutout the Raiders on two hits.

WSU, though, broke through with the only run of the game in the sixth. J.D. Orr led off with a walk and went to second on a bunt by Jason DeFevers. Mitch Roman walked and after both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch, Ryan Fucci plated Orr with a grounder to short.

Scholtens (2-0) struck out a batter in each of the final three innings to finish with 12 for the game. He caught Dayton’s Pat Meehan looking at a called third strike for the final out to complete the perfect game. It is the first perfect game in Wright State history and the first no-hitter for the program since Darrell Back accomplished the feat at Valparaiso on May 16, 1993.
