CANTON — Several Greene County area high school swimming competitors competed in the state swimming championships, Friday and Saturday at the C.T. Branin Natatorium.

Xenia Christian’s Eric Knowles and Bellbrook’s Cody Bybee both came back home with two state championship titles. Knowles claimed wins in the Division II 200-yard Individual Medley and in the 500-yard Freestyle. Bybee set a new state tournament record in the Division II 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:36.74. He also won the D-II 100-yard butterfly final.

How area swimmers fared at the state swimming and diving championships, held Friday and Saturday in Canton:

Boys Basketball

Bulldogs win sectional title

TROY — The Yellow Springs Bulldogs upset top-seeded New Madison Tri-Village, 51-50, on Saturday at Troy High School to claim the Division IV sectional title. No individual statistics were available from the game.

Yellow Springs (19-6) led 25-21 at halftime. The Bulldogs will now play Metro Buckeye Conference foe Middletown Christian (14-10) for the district title at 8 p.m. at UD Arena in Dayton. The two teams split the two regular-season meetings between the two schools, both winning on their home floor.

Carroll upends Marshall in sectional final

DAYTON — D.J. Sommers scored a team-high 12 points, Beau Austin and Joe Cogan scored eight points each, and Stafford Stevens tossed in seven points to lead fifth-seeded Carroll to a 40-33 win over Dayton Thurgood Marshall, Saturday at UD Arena.

No individual statistics were available for Marshall. Carroll (17-7) will now face Greater Catholic League Co-Ed North Division rival Kettering Alter (18-6) for the Division II district title at 2 p.m. Sunday at UD Arena in Dayton.

Alter finished first in the GCLC North; Carroll was second just one game behind. The two teams split their two contests during the regular season.

Basketball

CSU teams head to Birmingham for SIAC tourney

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — The Central State men’s and women’s basketball teams are set to compete in upcoming Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Tournament beginning on Tuesday, March 1.

This year will mark the first time Central State has participated in the SIAC Tournament as both basketball programs joined the conference last summer.

The Lady Marauders earned the No. 3 seed in the SIAC West Division after a 13-13 overall record and a 6-10 mark in conference play. CSU will take on No. 6 seed Clark-Atlanta. CAU finished the regular season with a 6-20 ledger and a 4-12 record in the SIAC East Division. Despite a losing record, CAU was victorious, 80-58, in the only meeting with CSU this season.

The women are scheduled for a 3:30 pm (Eastern) tip on Tuesday afternoon.

The CSU men’s program will make their SIAC Tournament debut as the No. 7 seed after a 11-14 regular season record, going 9-9 in the SIAC West Division. After an oversight had CSU originally matched up against Claflin University, Morehouse was rightfully named the No. 2 seed and will play Central State on Tuesday night. Morehouse enters the tournament after a 14-9 finish to the regular season with a 10-8 mark in SIAC East Division play. The Marauders edged Morehouse, 88-81, in overtime back in January.

CSU and MC will conclude the opening round of the tournament at 10:15 p.m. (Eastern) on Tuesday.

All tournament games will be held in Bill Harris Arena at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Men’s Basketball

Yellow Jackets fall

ELKINS, W. Virginia — Host Davis & Elkins University (11-16, 5-7 G-MAC) had five players score in double figures, led by Teron Owens’ game-high 22, in Saturday’s 87-74 Great Midwest Athletic Conference win over Cedarville.

A trio of Cedarville Yellow Jackets got into double-figure scoring in the game. Patrick Bain led the team with 18 points scored, Easton Bazzoli added 14 and Robert Okoro tossed in 12 in the loss. Cedarville is now 14-14 overall this season, 5-7 G-MAC.

Women’s Basketball

Cedarville wins over Davis & Elkins

ELKINS, W. Virginia — Abby Wolford scored a game-high 17 points, Kaysie Brittenham added a dozen points and Kayla Linkous finished with 10 to lead Cedarville University to a 63-46 win over Davis & Elkins on Saturday at the McDonnell Center.

With the win, Cedarville is now 21-7 overall and 12-2 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

Davis & Elkins (11-15, 7-7 G-MAC) was led by Stephanie Wooten and Sydney Turner who scored 15 and 12 points respectively.

Baseball

Raiders upset N.C. State

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Wright State baseball team erased an early 4-1 deficit with nine unanswered runs and then held off a late North Carolina State rally to defeat the no. 8-ranked Wolfpack 10-8 in the series opener Friday afternoon at Doak Field.

The Wolfpack scored a run in the eighth and three in the ninth to trim the margin to two, but Jack Van Horn retired the final two batters to pick up his second save of the year.

Jesse Scholtens (1-0) had a rough second, but his other five innings were of the shutout variety as the senior righty struck out eight and walked just one in allowing six hits.

Offensively, John Brodner finished with three hits and two RBI while Ryan Fucci, Gabe Snyder, J.D. Orr and Zach Weatherford each had two hits.

NC State (5-2) won the final two games of the three-game series. Wright State is also 5-2. The Raiders take on High Point, N.C. at 4 p.m. today, March 1, and will play their home opener Tuesday, March 8, at 6:30 p.m. at Nischwitz Stadium.
