Ambassadors knock off Miami Valley

XENIA — Host Xenia Christian knocked Miami Valley from the unbeaten ranks in the Metro Buckeye Conference on Monday. The Ambassadors led 24-23 at halftime, both teams scored five points in a defensive-minded third quarter, then Xenia Christian (17-4, 7-3 MBC) outscored the Rams, 11-9 in the final stanza to claim the 40-37 win.

No individual statistics were provided for Xenia Christian on the MBC’s website. Elea Karras led Miami Valley (16-3, 8-1 MBC) with 15 points scored.

Xenia Christian closes out its regular season schedule on Monday, Feb. 8 with a game at Springfield Northeastern.

Bulldogs nab first win

YELLOW SPRINGS — Elizabeth Smith scored a team-high 33 points and host Yellow Springs defeated Springfield Catholic Central, 62-49, Monday night, to record the team’s first win of the season.

Smith was also tough on the boards with 15 defensive rebounds. The Bulldogs Gracie Price also finished in double-figure scoring with 14 points.

Yellow Springs (1-19, 0-99 Metro Buckeye Conference) will host Troy Christian at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, then will close out its regular season Feb. 8 with a game in Arcanum against Franklin Monroe.

Skyhawks grounded by Marshall

DAYTON — A tough beginning to each half spelled trouble on Monday for the Fairborn Skyhawks.

Host Dayton Marshall outscored Fairborn 15-3 in the first quarter, and 14-6 in the third, for a 46-26 win.

Jana Brown-Griffith led Fairborn with 10 points scored, while Courtney Mustard and Evelyn Oktavec scored five points each. The Skyhawks host Springboro at 7 p.m. today in the Baker Middle School Memorial Fieldhouse, then they’ll wrap up their regular season on the road at 2 p.m. Saturday against Xenia.

Patriot rally falls short

KETTERING — Visiting Carroll outscored Alter 37-34 in the second half, but came up short of the win on Saturday. The host Alter Knights claimed a 56-54 win.

Amanda Schroeder led Carroll in scoring and rebounding. She tossed in 19 points and grabbed 14 boards in the loss. Ellie Rumme was the other Patriots player to finish in double-figure scoring with 10 points.

Carroll (13-7, 7-2 Greater Catholic League Co-Ed North) will host Middletown Fenwick at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3.

Boys Basketball

Golden Eagles defeat Greeneview

JAMESTOWN — Host Greeneview outscored Bellbrook 36-25 in the second half, but the Rams couldn’t dig themselves out of the 29-11 first-half deficit. Bellbrook won Saturday’s contest, 54-47, at Greeneview High.

John Bush scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Golden Eagles, Donnie Crouch tossed in 14 points while Ethan Savey and Storm Painter both scored seven in the win.

Kollyn Brooks led Greeneview with 14 points scored, with Ethan Bradds finishing with 11 points and Nick Fife adding 10.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Warner falls to Miamisburg

Xenia’s 8th grade boys basketball team lost to Miamisburg 43-24 on Monday. Blake Carson led the Bucs in scoring with 11 points. Nate Saner added four points, Andrew Pollander scored three, while Trent Jordan, Gavin Gerhardt and E.J. Wilson added two each. The Bucs play Springboro White in the Greater Western Ohio Conference Middle School tournament at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday Feb. 6 at Kettering Middle School.

Raiders fall at Detroit

DETROIT — The Wright State men’s basketball team rallied from a seven-point in the second half to lead by one with 2:34 left, only to see Detroit score 12 of the game’s final 16 points to defeat the Raiders 75-68 Sunday afternoon at Calihan Hall.

Wright State shot 55 percent for the game, but was just five of 17 from behind the arc and hit seven of 10 free throws while the Titans shot 48 percent, were seven of 16 from three-point range and connected on 28 of 37 foul shot attempts, 18 of 24 in the second half.

J.T. Yoho, who became the 30th WSU player to reach the 1,000-point plateau, Friday at Oakland, led the Raiders with a career-high 31 points on Sunday, hitting 13 of 15 shots in the process. Mark Alstork added 14 points while Joe Thomasson had nine and Grant Benzinger scored eight.

Anton Wilson hit five three-pointers en route to a team-high 18 points off the bench for Detroit (10-11, 4-6 Horizon) while Jaleel Hogan had 13, Josh McFolley 12, Jarod Williams 11.

Wright State (13-10, 7-3 Horizon) returns home to face Milwaukee on Thursday, Feb. 4, and Green Bay on Saturday, Feb. 6, with both games starting at 7 p.m..

SPORTS BANQUETS

Masterson to headline First Pitch Banquet

FAIRBORN — The Wright State baseball program has announced that major league pitcher and Beavercreek native Justin Masterson will be the keynote speaker at the 12th annual First Pitch Banquet on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, on the main arena floor in WSU’s Nutter Center.

Justin Masterson is a 2003 graduate of Beavercreek High School where he starred in baseball and basketball. He then attended Bethel College in Mishawaka, Ind., for two seasons before transferring to San Diego State University for his junior year. There he pitched for Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn and was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 2nd round of the 2006 MLB draft following the college season. He shot through the minors and made his MLB debut on April 24, 2008.

The First Pitch Banquet features a sit-down dinner along with a silent auction. The cost for the event will be $70 per person or a VIP table for 10 guests costing $1000. The VIP table includes recognition during the program and admission to a pre-event meet and greet with Masterson. The doors will open to the public at 6:30 p.m.
