State-ranked Golden Eagles roll
BELLBROOK — Led by 6-2 center Gabby Ozoude, unbeaten and fourth-ranked Bellbrook overpowered Wilmington 62-39 Monday night in a non-league game on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Ozoude put on a dazzling show as she towered over the other nine players on the floor, finishing with 27 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots. She was 13 for 17 from the field.
“She’s a force,” Wilmington coach Mark Short said of Ozoude.
Wilmington was led by Mya Jackson who had 12 points and Katlyn Jamiel, who had 11 points. Sarah Quallen came off the bench to lead WHS with seven rebounds. Jackson also had seven boards. Faith Sanderson, who was in foul trouble much of the night, led with three assists.
Cassidy Hofacker scored 10 for Bellbrook while Stephanie Dorn tossed in nine.
Bellbrook was clicking on all cylinders early, racing out to a 17-1 lead before WHS finally connected on a field goal with 1:26 to play in the first quarter.
“This is one of our better all-around games,” said BHS coach Jason Tincher. “I thought all facets of our game were great. We seemed to be on point.”
The difference grew to 30 at one point, 45-15, as Wilmington could never find the range offensively, connecting on just 12 of 41 from the field. Bellbrook, on the other hand, was 27 for 60, but 15 for 28 in the first half.
“Like I just told them, 16-0 is pretty cool, but let’s get back to work tomorrow,” said Tincher. “Let’s play loose and focus on energy and enthusiasm. It doesn’t take any talent to bust your butt and work hard.”
The Golden Eagles will host Middletown Madison at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Jan. 20 at Bellbrook High.
Skyhawks lose to CJ
DAYTON — Evelyn Oktavec scored a team-high 19 points, Courtney Mustard scored nine, while Jana Brown-Griffith, Kaylie Cook, and Kirsten George scored six each in Monday’s 56-48 loss on the road to Chaminade Julienne.
The Skyhawks (4-11) held a 20-12 lead after one quarter of play, but the host Eagles outscored Fairborn 32-16 combined in the second and third quarters to nab the win.
Fairborn will host Xenia at 7 p.m. tonight, Jan. 20, at Baker Middle School’s Memorial Fieldhouse.

Fearrin named Swimmer of the Week
INDIANAPOLIS — Wright State senior Kayla Fearrin has been selected as the Horizon League Female Swimmer of the Week for the week ending January 17, it was announced Tuesday by the league office.
Fearrin (Carmel, Ind.) won three individual events as the Raiders won at Cleveland State on Saturday, 158-142. She was victorious in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:06.03), 200 breaststroke (2:20.53) and 400 individual medley (4:41.51).
Along with the three individual wins, Fearrin was part of the WSU team that won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:44.90.
On the season, Fearrin holds the team’s top times in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and is third in the 200 and 400 individual medley. She is also part of the top 200 and 400 medley relay teams.
Wright State returns to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23, with a tri-meet at the University of Cincinnati against the Bearcats and Virginia Tech.

Benzinger lifts Raiders past Detroit
FAIRBORN — A Grant Benzinger three with 17.1 seconds remaining capped off a 17-7 rally in the final 4:31 as the Wright State men’s basketball team pulled out a 77-76 Horizon League victory over Detroit, Monday night at WSU’s Nutter Center.
Mark Alstork led Wright State with 21 points, 16 coming in the second half, while Michael Karena had 15, Grant Benzinger 12 and Joe Thomasson 10 along with eight rebounds.
Paris Bass paced all scorers with 28 for Detroit (9-8, 3-3 Horizon) while Anton Wilson had 16 and Jaleel Hogan added 13.
Wright State (11-8, 5-1 Horizon) continues the five-game homestand on Friday, Jan. 22, as the Raiders takes on league leader Valparaiso (16-3, 6-0 Horizon) for a 7 p.m. contest.

Masterson to headline First Pitch Banquet
FAIRBORN — The Wright State baseball program has announced that major league pitcher and Beavercreek native Justin Masterson will be the keynote speaker at the 12th annual First Pitch Banquet on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, on the main arena floor in WSU’s Nutter Center.
Justin Masterson is a 2003 graduate of Beavercreek High School where he starred in baseball and basketball. He then attended Bethel College in Mishawaka, Ind., for two seasons before transferring to San Diego State University for his junior year. There he pitched for Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn and was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 2nd round of the 2006 MLB draft following the college season. He shot through the minors and made his MLB debut on April 24, 2008.
The First Pitch Banquet features a sit-down dinner along with a silent auction. The cost for the event will be $70 per person or a VIP table for 10 guests costing $1000. The VIP table includes recognition during the program and admission to a pre-event meet and greet with Masterson. The doors will open to the public at 6:30 p.m.
