Yellow Springs defeats Newton

PLEASANT HILL — Isaiah Taylor scored a team-high 13 points, Kaner Butler added 11 while Ethan Dewine and Joe Plumer scored nine points each as visiting Yellow Springs claimed a 53-41 non-league win on Friday.

The Metro Buckeye Conference-leading Bulldogs (10-3, 6-0 MBC) will next host Middletown Christian at 7 p.m. Friday, then they’ll participate in the Flyin’ to the Hoop high school basketball showcase with a game against Dayton Northridge at 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 17 at Kettering Fairmont’s Trent Arena.

Ambassadors lose two

XENIA — The Xenia Christian Ambassadors fell in a non-league contest on Saturday, 85-66, to Tipp City Bethel. They’d lost 80-63 in a Metro Buckeye Conference game to Miami Valley on Friday.

Three Xenia Christian players finished in double-figure scoring in the Bethel loss: Ashton Burke led the team with 17 points, David Kingsinger scored 16 to go along with a team-high 10 rebounds, and Gabe Woodard scored 11.

Burke also led the way against Miami Valley with 13 points while Woodard and Austin Frueh scored a dozen points each.

The Ambassadors (0-12, 0-5 MBC) will host Springfield Emmanuel Christian at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12.

Patriots win one, lose one

The Carroll Patriots won a tough Greater Catholic League Co-Ed North battle in Middletown Fenwick, 28-18, on Friday, but fell 58-49 in a non-league Saturday contest at Dayton Meadowdale.

D.J. Sommers led Carroll in the road win over Fenwick with a 12-point effort. Sommers was Carroll’s top scorer in Saturday’s loss to Meadowdale as well, finishing with 14 points while T.K. Robinson and Jared Kieninger finished with 10 each.

Carroll (8-5, 2-3 GCLC North) next plays Saturday Jan. 16 in the Flyin’ to the Hoop basketball showcase, a 10 a.m. contest against Urbana at Kettering Fairmont’s Trent Arena.

Skyhawks fly past Pirates

FAIRBORN — Branden Lilley tossed in 31 points, and Jordan Pumroy added 13 as the Fairborn Skyhawks defeated West Carrollton 79-42 Friday night.

Fairborn (7-5, 3-0 Greater Western Ohio Conference, South) has now won four of its last five games and three straight. They host Springfield Kenton Ridge at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Baker Memorial Fieldhouse.

‘Bolts best Beavers

CLAYTON — Host Northmont outscored Beavercreek 13-9 in the final quarter of play to earn a 51-45 win, Friday night at Northmont High. Jason Biggs led the Thunderbolts with a game-high 22 points.

Beavercreek’s Jackson Hansen scored a team-high 18 points, and Jon Alessandro finished with 17, in the loss. Beavercreek (1-10, 0-3 Greater Western Ohio Conference, Central Division) will next host Vandalia Butler at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12.

Girls Basketball

Fairborn wins over West Carrollton

WEST CARROLLTON — The visiting Skyhawks rolled out to a 36-10 halftime lead and never trailed the rest of the way, for a 64-35 win Saturday over the West Carrollton Pirates.

Evelyn Oktavec led Fairborn with 18 points, Kirsten George finished with 14 while Courtney Mustard and Ashley Dagnan each finished with 13 in the win. Fairborn (3-9, 1-2 in the Greater Western Ohio Conference’s South Division) plays next at Springboro at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Buccaneers lose on the road

SPRINGBORO — Xenia’s Trinity Morton came off the bench to score a team-high seven points, but first-place Springboro (9-3, 3-0 Greater Western Ohio Conference, South) dominated for a 65-22 win.

Kelly Wurth led Springboro with 15 points scored.

Xenia (2-12, 1-2 GWOC South) played at Dayton Meadowdale on Monday. They’ll then host Miamisburg in a GWOC South battle at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Xenia High.

Bellbrook stays undefeated

OAKWOOD — The visiting Bellbrook Golden Eagles jumped out to a 25-15 halftime lead and never gave it up in a 44-28 win on Saturday. Sophomore guard Cassidy Hofacker led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 12 points, and center Gabby Ozoude had her finest offensive game of the year as she also scored 12 points. Oakwood’s Lauren Taylor led the Jills with 15 points in the loss.

Bellbrook, now 7-0 in the Southwestern Buckeye League’s Southwestern Division and 13-0 overall, will host Germantown Valley View at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14.

Xenia Christian 48, Tipp City Bethel 32: No individual statistics were reported from Saturday’s game. The visiting Ambassadors led 29-14 at halftime and extended that 15-point lead by another point in the second half. Xenia Christian (11-3, 4-2 MBC) is currently in second place in the Metro Buckeye Conference. The Ambassadors play a non-league contest at Carlisle at 7:30 p.m. today, Jan. 12.

Bulldog rally comes up short

YELLOW SPRINGS — The host Yellow Springs Bulldogs fell behind 30-18 at halftime, outscored visiting Dayton Stivers 29-22 the rest of the way, but just couldn’t overcome that halftime deficit in a 52-47 loss on Saturday.

Elizabeth Smith scored 36 points for Yellow Springs (0-14, 0-5 MBC) and led the team with six rebounds as well.

The Bulldogs hosted Miami Valley on Monday. They’ll host Middletown Christian at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Carroll sinks Middletown Fenwick

MIDDLETOWN — The visiting Patriots kept Fenwick from scoring more than nine points in each of the two quarters of the second half, and pulled away to Saturday’s 52-34 Greater Catholic League Co-Ed North Division win.

Amanda Schroeder led all scorers with 18 points and Ellie Rumme was next with eight points.

Carroll (8-5, 4-1 GCLC North) played at Beavercreek on Monday night. They’ll host Cincinnati McNicholas at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Ankeney wins three

The Ankeney eighth grade girls Beat Fairborn, Miamisburg, and Springboro White. The girls now have a 10-0 record and 19 game winning streak dating back to last year. Morgan Rhoades and Grace Phillips continue leading the Chargers in scoring with a big week. Rhoades scored a total of 40 points and Phillips scored 26 points. Gabby Fawley scored 18 points and provided the inside presence this week that the team needs to continue its winning ways.

Tiernan McKitrick continues to guard the top offensive player and rebound on defense and on offense. Diane Begnigno continues with lots of assists, and she anchors the press, and full-court man-to-man, defense. Addy Gray and Kristi Campbell lead the bench in scoring and rebounding and continue stellar efforts on defense. Abby Day, Nicole Wienert, and Molly Bukiewicz are playing well and are making strides on defense.

Ankeney faces major challenges this week with games versus Springboro Blue, Kettering Navy and cross-town rival Coy on Saturday.

Women’s Basketball

Raiders hold off Northern Kentucky

FAIRBORN — Wright State saw a 25-point first half shrink to one in the fourth quarter, but held on down the stretch for a 66-61 Horizon League decision over Northern Kentucky Saturday afternoon at WSU’s Nutter Center.

Wright State shot 36 percent overall compared to 31 percent for the Norse. The Raiders led 38-16 in points in the paint and 14-6 in second-chance points as they held a 58-42 rebounding advantage, 19-11 on the offensive end.

Kim Demmings paced WSU with 22 points and added eight rebounds while Richelle van der Keijl posted a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds to go with four blocks.

Christine Roush led Northern Kentucky (9-5, 1-2 Horizon) with 16 points while Shar’Rae Davis had 11 off the bench.

Wright State (13-3, 3-0 Horizon League) heads to Michigan next weekend for a pair of games, taking on Detroit at 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 14, followed by Oakland at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 16.

Men’s Basketball

Wright State wins at N. Kentucky

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — The Wright State men’s basketball team held Northern Kentucky to 18 points in the second half as the Raiders picked up a 60-46 Horizon League win over the Norse Saturday afternoon at the BB&T Arena

WSU hit 12 of 24 shots the final 20 minutes, including three of five three-pointers, to end up at 44 percent overall while NKU made just five of 22 shots for 23 percent in shooting 42 percent for the game.

Mark Alstork led the way for the Raiders with 18 points while J.T. Yoho had 13 off the bench, Joe Thomasson added 11 and Michael Karena scored nine.

Wright State (8-8, 2-1 Horizon) begins a five-game homestand next weekend with games against Cleveland State on Thursday, January 14, and Youngstown State on Saturday, January 16, with both contests starting at 7 p.m.
